that is exactly how the screen looked .. I dont have my desktop anymore .. but I am still able to run programs and use my start button.. I also ran all the same steps as what is there . (( also have my hjt log)).. I was going to try and do the same thing as was quoted to on that posting . but honestly I was a bit concerned since I didnt want to cause more damage than good . so I wanted to make sure that the same repair would work for my pc ..

Can you post up an Hijack This log so that a MOD can take a look at it before any drastic moves. Once you post up, then hold up for further instructions...
Let's not get too hasty with this...If not already done, download HijackThis:

Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

First please do this:

Click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Go to the forum here and upload the files found in the C:\Program Files\PSGuard folder.

Here are the directions for uploading the files:

Just click "New Topic", fill in the needed details and post a link to your thread here. Click the "Browse" button. Navigate to the files on your computer. If there are multiple files to be uploaded click the "More attachments" button for each extra file and browse to the files. When all the files are listed in the windows click "Post" to upload the files.

Please read these instructions carefully and copy them to notepad! Save the notpad file to your desktop. Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

* Go here to download and install CCleaner
Do not use it yet.

* Click Here and download Killbox and save it to your desktop.

* Click here to download smitfraudfix.zip. Download it and unzip it to your desktop and have it ready to run later.

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to.

* Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Information Update
Security IGuard
PSGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

* Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Information Update] C:\Program Files\Information Update\iu.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

* Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\wp.exe

C:\wp.bmp

C:\bsw.exe

C:\Windows\sites.ini

C:\Windows\popuper.exe

C:\Windows\system32\hhk.dll

C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll

C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe

C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe

C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe

C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp8675.tmp

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winnook.exe

C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html

C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe

C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp5C68.tmp

C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

Exit the Killbox.

* Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Find and delete these folders if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Information Update
C:\Program Files\PSGuard
C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files

* IMPORTANT!: If you forget to run the smitfraud.reg file you will not be able to boot your computer normally. DO NOT forget this step. Locate smitfraudfix.reg on your desktop and doubleclick on it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After you receive the prompt "merged successfully", follow the rest of instructions below.

* Start Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner

* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

* Restart back into Windows normally now.

* Download the Hoster from here . UnZip the file and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here.

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

I said to uninstall them "if found". Go ahead and do the rest. You are not going to have all the files and folders etc, but you need to perform all the steps to be thorough.

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

Exit the Killbox.

* Start Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner

* Restart back into Windows normally now.
