Tried Everything...no Sound!

3553 Views 40 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  dtech10
Hey ...let me start by saying I am no computer wiz. That being said I have mysteriously lost all sound on my computer. I have done a physical check that also included connecting a completely seperate pair of speakers to see if they were the problem. I have run ad-aware, norton anti-virus, hijack-this etc.. I have re-installed and updated my drivers for my sound (RealTek AC97). I have to admit..I dont know how to tell if I have a sound card or onboard sound though. I have even system restored. Nothing has worked. When my speakers are on they seem to be working, and through media player the graphics "show" that sound is playing..but all I hear is nothing. If I turn my speakers all the way up I can hear static, and when I was updating the drivers the speakers made a popping sound once or twice. Here is some important info about my PC. It is an HP Pavilion a342n w/ 2.60 GHZ pentium 4 processor, 512 MB SDRAM memory, 120 GB Hard Drive, Intel Extreme Graphics 2 w/64MB shared video memory. I have a Viewsonic flat screen monitor which also has speakers...which may cause some conflict?? I have two Polk Audio desktop speakers connected. I dont know what info you need so I just gave you it all. Any help would be awesome...thanks!

No its the detailed report not the quick one, you can choose to look at physical device properties.

Another way of carrying out what the last poster said is to disable the modem and network card (if they are physical cards remove them). Then try the uninstall of the soundchip drivers and then reinstall.
I dont know if I am doing this right or not...here is the report I got

I quick check again

If XP go into the start menu then go to> control panel >performance and maintenance>system>hardware> device manager>expand the sound video and game controller listing - and looK at the sound devices and see if they are all seen as operating OK (no yellow exclamation marks). If nothing shows up there stay in device manager and click on:-

View>Resources by type> expand that branch to show your IRQ listing and post what it says.
No conflicts...everything is enabled and functioning properly. How do I post what it says??
That didnt work obviously...Ill keep trying to figure it out :)

hmmm....have you replaced the speakers? I'm sorry if you have already said yes to a similar question. But I was thinking that since you said your mobile caused some interference, it is possible the speakers are not working Just because you can hear interference, doesn't mean they are working.

Is just a thought.
After u did the reformat did go to the windows update site and update??

If not try that and then reload your drivers.. This worked for me!

Just my Half pennies worth :)
I know its not the speakers because I have a laptop I connected them to and they work on the laptop. I also connected a different pair of speakers to this computer and they didnt work either. I did update the drivers...didnt work unfortunately :( Thanks for all the good ideas anyways guys!

Try downloading and using the driver from the realtek site, the Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000/XP for Driver only one from this link

Just to let you know...a few days ago my computer flipped out and began a cycle of endless restarting. Since it was still under warranty (I got it for Christmas) I took it in to a service center. They were 100% sure it was a virus. Now they told me they have to replace the MOTHERBOARD!! Thank heavens its still under warranty. Word to the wise...STAY AWAY FROM HP! Anyways..thanks for all your help, Im sure something would have worked if I didnt have a thousand dollar hunk of junk :)

Hello Classylassy. I dont know how to do the chat thing on this site but I am the moopy4 you emailed with the info on the Arun hotel. Conected with the picture you psted last year on here.
Hey Moopy well done u! Now every one on this thread will know. :)
I tried so hard last night to figure out how to send a message and talk to you but just couldn't figure out where abouts you were on the site to get a reply. I tried going into a chat room but I was the only one there, it got a bit lonley so I rummiged round all the forums to see if you were in one of them activly taking part so I could contact you. No luck but I read so many interesting things on the way. Your name comes up telling me my "buddys on line". Maybe you can tell me how to find you when it says that. I will keep trying till then. As a matter of fact it says you are on line now. I will keep a close eye on this place where you put your holiday picture if you want to tell me how to chat or message.

Yeah your sound card was fried, I dint know why everyone finds it so hard to believe onboard stuff dies, the pci ones die so whats the diff, thats ok had an ob lan die on me on a 1 mo old Gigabyte mob, it happens.
Try Device Manager / DVD-CDROM Drives

For every drive, click on "Properties", then uncheck :
"Enable digital CD audio for this CDROM Drive"

Hope this will help

(It solved my problem anyway).
Are you trying to play MP3 files or a CD? Have you tried different players?
Don't panic.
