Hey ...let me start by saying I am no computer wiz. That being said I have mysteriously lost all sound on my computer. I have done a physical check that also included connecting a completely seperate pair of speakers to see if they were the problem. I have run ad-aware, norton anti-virus, hijack-this etc.. I have re-installed and updated my drivers for my sound (RealTek AC97). I have to admit..I dont know how to tell if I have a sound card or onboard sound though. I have even system restored. Nothing has worked. When my speakers are on they seem to be working, and through media player the graphics "show" that sound is playing..but all I hear is nothing. If I turn my speakers all the way up I can hear static, and when I was updating the drivers the speakers made a popping sound once or twice. Here is some important info about my PC. It is an HP Pavilion a342n w/ 2.60 GHZ pentium 4 processor, 512 MB SDRAM memory, 120 GB Hard Drive, Intel Extreme Graphics 2 w/64MB shared video memory. I have a Viewsonic flat screen monitor which also has speakers...which may cause some conflict?? I have two Polk Audio desktop speakers connected. I dont know what info you need so I just gave you it all. Any help would be awesome...thanks!

What version of windows are you running?

If XP go into the start menu then go to> control panel >performance and maintenance>system>hardware> device manager and looK at the sound devices and see if they are all seen as operating OK (no yellow exclamation marks). If it all looks fine there try uninstalling the sound device from there, reboot and see if windows picks it up.

Is my sound card bad?? When I install drivers it sounds like it wants to work..maybe some kind of interference. I was reading something about IRQs...what are those?? Im in way over my head...HELP ME!

If you have winXP try a system restore to a date prior to when you lost sound.

I did that and I also system recovered. Still no sound...I am at my wits end!!!!! did my sound card die?

Triple check all the connections to see something hasnt come loose. The soundchip is on the motherboard, not a seperate card. You could try re-installing the drivers from the Pavillion site.

Try the HP site here for troubleshooting sound.

Installed new drivers...no sound. I was checking system diagnostics and there was a bunch of things with exclamation signs...Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller, Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter, " DLS Synthesizer, " DRM Audio Descrambler, " GS Wavetable Synthesizer, " Streaming Clock Proxy, " Quality Manager Proxy, " Service Proxy. It says it is not connected to the system. Do I need these?? Is this the problem?

Now I hear tons of static and some faint beeping out of my speakers...any speakers I have connected so I know its not the speakers. It intensifies when I move my mouse around. Any ideas?

Sometimes when I have more than one window open using sounds, one won't work, for example, if I have a game I'm playing minimized, and I try to play a c.d., the c.d. won't make a sound because the game is using the "sound". Just thought you might want to check to see if that might be your problem?

Check the speaker setup is not set to digital only.

Start>control panel>sound speech and audio devices>change the speaker settings>advanced>advanced - there should be a dialogue box here that has digital output, ensure it is not ticked.

(or if you have a volume control icon in your system tray just ringht click on the icon and go to adjust audio properties then click on advanced to get to the same dialogue box).

If digital input is not enabled I would suggest deleting all the items that have an exclamation mark and reboot and see if windows picks them up, failing that try reinstalling windowsXP on top of your currrent install (which will keep your current programs intact).

I am open to any ideas at all..just give me something. I am so desperate at this point. I have searched the internet for hours looking for similar issues. I found something about jumpers?? What does that mean?? Throw out any ideas you can think of, just let it fly. Im beggin ya.

Have you checked in your BIOS that the intergrated sound is enabled?

If not, you should do that.

Some BIOS programs are accessed by pressing the del key as the system starts. You should see a message that says PRESS DEL KEY TO ENTER SETUP or words to that effect.

Once you are in the BIOS go to intergrated devices, or advanced settings, or something similar, and you should see an optoin to enable onboard/intergrated sound.

Make sure that is enabled. It shouldn't have been changed, but it is possible that the BIOS has failed somehow, and accidently disabled the sound. unlikely, but possible.

Also, if you have a modem installed, check to see if the wave device for the modem is disabled, before you install your audio drivers.

Realistically, it shouldn't matter, but, it is windows xp, and it is MS so anything is possible.

This is a wild idea...but I remember when the sound shut down that I was recieving a call on my cell phone and when it is in close proximity to any speaker there is a disturbance. Right at that moment I lost sound. I dont know why I just now thought of it...but could something have happened there???

Remove all sound card related drivers.
Reboot, and then enter the BIOS.
Disable the onboard sound device.

Then reboot windows.
Then..shut down windows
Then re-enable the onboard sound card in the BIOS
Then allow windows to install what it thinks are the correct drivers for your sound card.

Test

If the test is un-succesful, then install the drivers that came with your sound card. You may need the motherboard driver disk for this, if it is an onboard sound card.

You are correct in thinking that the interference caused by your mobile phone may have caused a sound failure, but, it would have to be pre-longed period of time for it to do so. but it is possible.

If all the above fails, then you will need a new sound card. remembering to disable the onboard one or other should you decide to buy a new one.
