When booting up, the "Media Test Failure, Check Cable" message always appears. During use the LCD displays glowing pixels in various colors (appear as patchy snow and/or lines). This has been happening intermittently for months. The machine otherwise functions perfectly. What part do I need to replace - LCD, mother board, cable, video card, other?

It sounds like either the LCD controller, the LCD panel, or perhaps just a loose connection between the panel and the motherboard. It could also be a broken wire between the LCD and the motherboard.

Howdy folks...

"Media Test Failure, Check Cable"
In that error do you also see PXE-E61 because that is an error that it is trying to boot from the network card to a network drive, you can disable that in the BIOS...

The "During use the LCD displays glowing pixels in various colors (appear as patchy snow and/or lines). " is more than likely the video card...

But...could be a bad connection as JohnWill suggested...

Sorry for the delayed response...yes, the message is proceded by PXE-E61. The next line is PXE-M0F, Exiting Intel Boot Agent.

I can follow directions but don't usually fiddle with the bios and would need clear direction on how/what to modify.

A brief history -
Last year a technician said it was a loose cable. He "fixed it" and cleaned the machine. The repair lasted until shortly after I paid him.

I took it back and he then said the software setting for the display resolution was set too high for the hardware and set it lower. That didn't work either.

I've since reinstalled the machine operating system twice (restore disks) but the install stalls out around 98-99%. I then reboot and everything seems to work ok with exception of the error message and video issues.

Well...

I wouldn't worry about the PXE error for now, it's not hurting anything just annoying...

Next time the video problem happens try moving the laptops LCD panel back and fourth to see if it goes away, if it does then like John said there is a bad connection somewhere...

Let us know what you find...

Moving the panel sometimes works...quickly closing and opening the cover/LCD almost always works for a little while. Interestingly, closing a program or selecting a different window also will solve the problem short term.

I've mostly worked on desktops. Any suggestions on where I can download Toshiba technical information including the diagram for the laptop showing all the screw locations and order to remove them? The other technician supposedly checked all the cable connections but I could double check them myself. Also, is Ebay the best place to purchase parts?

PS. Thanks for helping with my little problem. I hate to throw the laptop away or sell it for scrap....however the problem is more than annoying and the machine isn't really worth the cost of extensive tech support. I figure this is a good time for me to learn how to work on a laptop.
