Was the PC showing any performance issues just before this happened?

If you start tapping the F8 key from the second you start the PC does it eventually display a menu, if so use the arrow keys on your keyboard to highlight Last Known Good Configuration then click on the Enter key, let me know if that helps and please post what you see on screen.
Thanks. I was able to get to the menu with Last Known. .. clicked on it. .windows seemed to be staying but then it defaulted to the black screen with just my cursor after it went to the Start repair..etc
Hi marthablom,

Let's see if the following does the trick.

-----------

System Restore
  • Press and hold the Windows key + R on your keyboard.
  • In the Run box, type rstrui.exe and hit Enter.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your computer to a date before the issue(s) started.
Please follow the post above as that might work.

You didn't answer my question:

The answer to that may give us some clues to work from if System Restore doesn't fix things.

Also, did you make any changes to the system just before the problem occurred, updated or added new software, opened any emails from an unknown sender, downloaded any Torrent files, or anything else that you can think of.
It was slow to boot and the screen kept freezing..needing longer to complete tasks like saving a doc.

Were you able to perform a System Restore?

Thank you both very much. . The last suggestion does not work. Just black screen with my cursor.
From your reply in post 6 & 7 (and the failure of System Restore) the most likely cause would be a failing hard drive, in order to test it please follow this guide below. There could be other causes, but a failing hard drive is the most likely.

You can create the Seatools disc on any fully functional PC with a CD burner or use any PC to create the Flash Drive.

Open Internet Explorer and click on this: Seatools

Save the download to your desktop.

In Windows 7 right click the ISO file, select Open With, then select Windows Disc Image Burning Tool then follow the prompts.
For all other versions of windows (if you do not have an ISO burner) download this free software. ImgBurn Install the program (make sure you uncheck any boxes that will install bundled software) and start the application. Select the top left hand option to Write image file to disc and then on the next window click on the small yellow folder icon and browse to the ISO file on your desktop. Then click on the two grey discs with the arrow in between (bottom left) and leave it to complete the operation.

You will need a blank recordable CD or a re-recordable CD. If your PC has no CD/DVD drive or you would prefer to run Seatools from a Flash Drive follow this guide: How to run Seatools from a USB Flash Drive

When the CD has been burned boot the PC into the Bios setup and set the CD/DVD drive to 1st in the boot sequence Bios Boot Order Guide. Insert the disk in the drive then reboot and the disc will load into DOS. Click on Basic Tests and select the Long Test. If using a Flash Drive you need to set USB to 1st in the boot order, if there is no USB available in the boot order you will have to run the test from a CD.

A full set of instructions can be found here: Seatools instructions

When the test completes it will show a Pass or Fail.
