Three major issues with my PC

Hi guys... just joined the board and can say for sure and certain... "you have THE BEST "techie" site around!

Having said that, here's my own lil bundle of dramas...

Please have a go at answering ANY of them for me, but note that "1)" is by far my most urgent one.

1) For the past week I have not been able to access any sites via links in my emails (or hyperlinks I may have cut and pasted onto word docs, or links in PDF files) or in fact 'anywhere' -- EXCEPT through my URL address bar!

The only major things I have done to my PC around a week ago (that may or may not be associated with the problem) is: Downloaded and installed IE 7; Downloaded and installed Microsoft.Net Framework 2.0; downloaded and installed Mozilla Firefox for a couple of days, then uninstalled it again; and 'relaxed' my Internet security settings from medium-high to medium.

2) I've also noticed that I am no longer able to play downloaded flash videos EVEN though I have repeatedly downloaded Macromedia Flash (I've never had this problem before).

3) Since getting rid of Firefox and reverting back to IE 7 I have noticed that any desk-top shortcuts I have created from web site pages I have wanted to save (i.e. home pages of forums for example), no longer show up as IE 7 icons but rather just the bare bones file itself. Whatsmore, when I click on them to open them, I am prompted to determine 'which program I want to use to open them with'. It was never like this before

4) Every time I reboot my computer I get a series of error notices (i.e. "The following file can not be found etc...") which pop up sequentially shortly after the desk-top starts reloading itself. I have to click on "OK" (for each error notice) to get rid of it.

5) For a number of months now I have been UNABLE to do a SYSTEM RESTORE. No matter what date I select in the past -- and "yes, they're always BOLD ONES" -- I ultimately get a notification during the reboot stage telling me that "The selected Restore Point could not be used" or words to that effect.

In summary, I am coming closer and closer to the realization that I might have to do a full system reformat (maybe even a destructive one)... but I hope not.

Any help on any of these frustrating issues would be welcomed :):):)

Cheers,

Smeatz

P.S. I am NOT an advanced "computer whizz" like most on here, so please bae this in mind when replying. Thanks guys.

Hi,
do you think that including a HijackThis log in this post might help those trying to help you in trying to track down the problem(s)? Just a suggestion....

good luck

Thanks for replying... and yes, I'm happy to oblige... but you'll have to forgive my naivity here and share with me "just exactly what is a HijackThisLog".

Cheers,

Smeatz

Hi,

I'm not an expert but I suggest this is the first step you need to take: You need to include a log from HijackThis (HJT). Try this link

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Download and Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Once you've posted the log you need to wait for advice from a qualified member as to what to do next. You'll see a gold shield next to their name which shows they are qualified to take you through the next stages. I hope this helps … and good luck!

Richard.

Thanks to Cheeseball81 for this.

Thanks heaps, Richard. I downloaded HJT and ultimately produced the following log scan. See below:

Pssssssss... by the way, when you scan down the list, be sure to remember that you "didn't" see the key logger that I installed several years ago... lol

you, my friend, have all sorts of nasties in there. requesting this be moved to the security thread. Wait for a mod to move it and an expert to parse your log, but you've got stuff in there that definitely needs fixing.

as for the email issue, make sure that you are in html format and not txt.

tools > options > mail format tab > first box, should say html instead of txt. That should clear up any hyperlink issue.

Hi and welcome to TSG :)

Please Download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from one of the following
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/MsnVirRem.exe
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item9
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require
    a reboot.
  • Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it.
  • Once open, click the button labelled "Search
    and Destroy
    ".
<<Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if
    infected, Click OK.
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4)
    please acknowledge them and continue.
  • A Message should popup from MsnVirRem. If not,
double click the program again and it will finish.
Please Post the contents of
C:\msnvirrem.log along with a fresh HijackThis log

Valis.. Steve.. golferbob.. Richard

Thanks you all very much for your extremely helpful advice. I will be setting some time aside this evening to do some "power-butt-kicking" re the malware nasties in my system.

Thanks to you I have managed to get my linking issues sorted out and at least THEY are working normally again.

As for the remaining issues, I'll report back to you once I've instigated all the above advice (a few hours from now).

Thanks again :)

while you wait for a pro to come along you have a lot of items you don't need on your startup menu [04] . here are 2 website to help you trim it.

Hi golferbob... I have taken your advice re the "fat-trimming" exercise needed on my Start-Up Menu. However, as I honestly don't know what the majority of these files / programs actually are (or their function) I would greatly appreciate it if you OR ANYONE READING THIS could scan down the following list of items currently on my Start-Up menu) and advise me which ones I should keep running at all costs during start-up. I'll uncheck all the others you feel are non-essential so that my PC's start-up time can be tad faster :)

Thanking you in advance.
