I'm working on a computer that was infected by [email protected] and need help.

I have used HijackThis, AVG Anti-Spyware, Smitfraudfix, ATF Cleaner, Ad-Aware, Norton Anti-Virus 2006 to remove it. I no longer receive error messages that the system is infected, but it's still taking over 5 minutes to boot the computer. During this 5 minute boot process the system is brought to a grinding halt by he disk drive being constantly accessed. I recently used 'msconfig' to "Disable All" of the Startup processes hoping this would correct the problem but it did not. It still takes 5 minutes to boot the system.
Once the system is up and running, it seems to be working just fine and at normal speed with no constant disk access.

Here's my latest HijackThis file and Rapport.txt file from SmitFraudFix:

Thanks for your ongoing help,

TheLasVegasGuy

PS CookieGal - Thanks for the Email earlier.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.

When the trial period expires it becomes feature-limited freeware but is still worth keeping as a good on-demand scanner.

  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed, select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will run it in safe mode.
  1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning as it may interfere with the scanning process:
  2. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the icon on your desktop.
  3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  4. AVG will now begin the scanning process. Please be patient as this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete, do the following:
  5. If you have any infections you will be prompted. Then select "Apply all actions."
  6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower lef- hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file. This is important).
  8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • You need to use IE to run this scan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log along with the logs from the AVG and Panda scans.

Go to Control Panel – Add/Remove programs and remove the following, if there:

MyWebSearch
FunWebProducts

Click Here and download Killbox and save it to your desktop but don’t run it yet.

Rescan with HijackThis, close all browser windows except HijackThis, put a check mark beside these entries and click fix checked.

Then boot to safe mode:

How to restart to safe mode

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Put a tick by Standard File Kill.
  • In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time:

    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
    c:\windows\system32\f3PSSavr.scr
    C:\Documents and Settings\Lisa Cox\Favorites\shopping\Best Buy.url
    c:\program files\FunWebProducts
    C:\Documents and Settings\Lisa Cox\Favorites\-Autos-
    C:\Backup of Lisa's OLD System\Program Files\MyWebSearch

  • Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
  • It will ask for confirmation to delete the file.
  • Click Yes.
  • Continue with that procedure until you have pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.
  • Killbox may tell you that one or more files do not exist.
  • If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.
  • Next in Killbox go to Tools > Delete Temp Files
  • In the window that pops up, put a check by ALL the options there except these three:
    • XP Prefetch
    • Recent
    • History
  • Now click the Delete Selected Temp Files button.
  • Exit the Killbox.

Boot back to Windows normally and post another HijackThis log please.

Computer still takes about 5 minutes to boot up.
During this time the disk drive is being constantly accessed.
I'm sure this is what's slowing down the process.

I've used the Windows Task Manager to see if any Process is being a CPU hog.
System Idle Process ranges from 85 - 98.
Everynow and then "guard.exe" will use up to 29 then go back down.
Everything else is less than 2.

After about 5 minutes the disk drive access stops, and the system is back to normal speed.
The only time it goes into this constant access mode is after startup.
Once it completes, it does not repeat itself till re-boot.

Is this a remnant of the trojan we were working on earlier ??

I've checked the hardware and it all seems to be working properly.

Any suggestions ???

Thanks,

I've narrowed down when the constant disk access starts:

After turning on the system, the boot process goes just fine,
up to when I click on my Username to logon to Windows.
It's after clicking on my Username is when the constant disk access begins.

Hope this sheds some additional light on the problem.

Thanks,

Download ComboFix to your Desktop.

Reboot to Safe mode:

Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard just before Windows starts to load. If done properly a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Perform the following actions in Safe Mode.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running as that may cause it to stall

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Extract (unzip) the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Warning: Do not run Option #2 until you are instructed to do so. Running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Just wanted to say "Thank You for your help".

I appologize for taking so long to reply.
I became quite ill and have not returned to the E-world till now.
In the mean time, the computer I was working on had to be returned.
It was a friends computer I was working on and he could not wait any longer, so I told him to come over and pick it up.

He say's it's running great and is happy.
Wish I could have done a few more scans before he took it home....

Thank you so much for your help with my friend's computer.
We are both greatful for your help.

Thank You,

The Las Vegas Guy
