I am looking for a Microsoft technical document that deals with the processes around disk Initialization; Partitioning and Formatting in a Windows XP environment using the built-in Windows tools.

The type of document that I am looking for should explain in technical detail the exact processes that are involved when the above procedures are run.

If any Forum member has a link to such a document I would be grateful if they would post it in this thread.

Hi Dan

Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes I am very familiar with Disk Management, it is a tool which I use almost daily in work.

What I am actually looking for is a technical paper on exactly what the Windows utilities physically do during the entire Initialization; Partition; Format process. I must assume that most of us who are technically involved with computers on a daily basis have a fairly good understanding of this process in "theory". We all know what these processes do and why they do what they do. What I want is a real in depth technical document that explains the actual physical processes that are applied to the media during these processes.

I have searched the Microsoft archives with every search argument that I can imagine but have only been able to source the vanilla type documents that discuss these processes in a theoretical sense. These do not deal with the actual physical processes that are taking place.
