hello,
I have been through the forums and found where task manager opens and closes quickly, I wish it were that easy for me atleast I would have a chance to try to get to it before it closes. mine instead says that I have disabled it. I didnt!!!! I ran spybot spy cop and a few others and while they said they had deleted the dials and the trojan and such as soon as I rebooted it was back. Also the first hint of a problem was a black desktop with an ad in it that would not go away. I found the desktop.html file in windows, deleted it and now have a big white html page for a background I dont know how to use these tools you guys are talking about but I d/l them anyway. here is the source code for my desktop issue perhaps I am not the first to face this?

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

file******* WINDOWS/ desktop***html

I am using XP

also ran mcafee and deleted downloaders and quarrantened the dialers

Seen this a few times in the past and it was a pain to get rid of. Might start by trying the spyware scans in safe mode. As I recall none of them solved the problem and I started the have to look for what processes and services were running, figure out where they were loaded, and remove them manually.

Can you post a HijackThis scanlog?

Create a new, permanent folder for HijackThis and save the file to that. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

Direct HijackThis download link: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Also, since you've found the offending file, just go there and delete it:

C:\Documents and Settings\Ken Riley\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\wallpaper1.bmp

because of the virus infections found by norton system resore had to be turned off which in effect, deleted all prior restore points. as for the spyware software I never even thought of trying them in safe mode lol I will do that now. processes for user accounts have no effect I shut down everything but task manager and explorer and white screen remains. any experience I have (and trust me it it very limited) in shutting down system processes has resulted in windows shuting down. I will try running spybot in safe mode now and see what happens. wish me luck lol

Also download, unzip, and have available: Hoster: http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip

Have these instructions printed or in a convenient Notepad (or Wordpad) file so you can view them in Safe Mode. Have "show hidden (or all) files" checked in Folder Options > View in case you have to search for any hidden files to delete. Also ensure you do NOT have "hide file extensions..." enabled in Folder Options > View

Download and unzip to a convenient location the CoolWebShredder, CWShredder.exe available here: http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Then:

1 >> Restart in Safe Mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

2 >> In Safe Mode run the CoolWebShredder and have it "fix" detected problems. Then run HijackThis and check and "fix" the following entries:

Additional cleanup instructions: Go to the Control Panel > Internet Options applet. Clear the Temporary Internet Cache, History and Offline Content. Go to the Programs tab and select "reset web settings", including your home page if it has been altered. You can reset that later to what you desire.

Go to Start > Run, enter %temp% and then click Edit > Select All. Right click on the selected files and folders and delete them

>> run Hoster.exe and have it restore your original Hosts file

>> Reboot and post a new Scanlog and let us know what problems may remain.

Note: I find this entry somewhat puzzling:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe

Explorer.exe is a default shell and would not normally be seen in the Scanlog as a listed entry.
