I have a Dell dimension 4700 with windows xp home edition.
I have a problem shuting down (in fact doing anything) after my 25 year old grandson uses the PC for a time and then just leaves it for an houir or more. It can take 6 hours or more for me to get it shut down.
I have him on limited user control and when I go to the control panel to set the power options it won't let me change anything. As it is now it is set to turn off hard disk afer 1 hour and I think that is my problem.
When I go to control panel using my administrator options I have my power set to never turn off hard disks.
Can anyone tell me how to change the power settings in the limited user mode?

I have deleted you other post saying the same thing. Please don't post multiple threads on the same issue, and don't hijack another person's thread to post your issue.

First off, does it operate normally from an Admin account? The fact that it has an hour for the turn-off delay on the disk will not inhibit the machine shutting down, I think you're looking in the wrong area here.

Have you checked the Event Log to see if any errors are logged during shutdown?

Sorry about the multiple thread bit; can we put it down to ignorance?
It operates normally from the Admin account it the limited user has not logged on.
I don't know where to find an event log nor what to do about it if I should find it!

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. Check both all the logs for any indication of problems at the time of the delayed shutdown.

Windows saved user MYBABY/ Max Nienstadt registry while an appleication or service was still using the registry druing log off. The memory used by the users registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use

This is oftern caused by services running as a user account. Try configuring the services to run in either the local Service or Network Service account

I copied this from the event viewer application log
some others say application hanging/ application error
engine initialization failed The Dat files failed or are missing
etc etc.
I have no idea what to do about all this. However I did change the power settings on the user account and the PC seems to be running better now. I also got rid of 59 tracking cookies that were on the user account and ran a virus scan, clean disk, check disk and defrag
And a belated Happy New Year to you

Well it did it again last night. I tried to log off from the user account and the PC froze. A few minutes ago I checked the event vieweer and followed a link to Microsoft knowledge base and here is what it said.
