T41 thinkpad blackout

my thinkpad has recently started just blacking out in the middle of tasks.
tried it i safe mode and it just takes a while longer but it still blacks out
windows came up with an error report that says the VGA drivers might be corrupt but have tried changing that and it still has the same problems
the black out occurs even when connected to an external monitor
and everything just stops working
any idea what could be the problem

the systems specs are IBM T41 1.74ghz
windows xp pro sp2
1 gb ram

Howdy,

When you say Blackout do you mean the sceen just goes black and the PC keeps running?

windows came up with an error report that says the VGA drivers might be corrupt but have tried changing that and it still has the same problems

Tried changing what?
