Process Explorer reports that 50% of my CPU is being used by "System." it appears that there are two files, SMSS and CSRSS, directly subordinate to "System". I assume some process of one of my programs excites or activates these files. Nothing shows being active among my programs.

I don't have a clue as to how to troubleshoot this so you're contribution of information would be greatly appreciated.

XP SP3

Thank you

Bob

Is this causing problems or do you just feel that you need to control everything that is running on your machine?

You can remove the SMSS.exe but not smss.exe. The 2nd one is needed, the 1st is not.
CSRSS is also associated with trojans.
My advice is to run various health check programs.... SpyBot, AVG Anti Virus & Anti Spyware and AdAware.

DaveA - my machine slows to a crawl

rhysduk - my mistake in having the caplock on. Only the lower case files are on my machine. I ran my weekly avira scan this morning and I remain clean. Every other week I run the online scanners from Norton or NOD32 or BitDefender just as a safety audit..
