I'm brand new to Windows XP, and I skipped over creating system recovery discs in my new Compaq Presario S6000V a month ago. Now, I can't figure out where in my computer to go to create them!?!
Help!

If you are talking about boot floppies, there aren't really any for XP.

A floopy disk that can be used to boot into XP if the boot files are damaged or missing can be made from this:

http://www.svrops.com/svrops/downloads/zipfiles/xpprobt.exe

Otherwise, you would boot from the XP CD and enter the Recovery Console.

Also, look in Start > Help and Support for "Automatic System Recovery" (ASR) and "Backup".

In that case, I'd highly recommend an imaging program, like Acronis TrueImage, Norton Ghost, or Powerquest (now Norton, also) DriveImage. These will allow you to make a full backup of your drive while everything is working well and restore the exact image if the unthinkable should occur.

It is well worth the money. I use Acronis and it takes around 20 mins. for me to image my first drive on to the second while the OS is still running. It takes longer and a few CD-RW's to back up that way, but that gives you a backup that is "off-site", so to speak, if the whole computer were to go kaplooey.

New Compaqs and Hewlett-Packard computers are not shipped with any sort of recovery, restore or operating system CDs. Nope, it's all on the harddrive and if you want recovery CDs, you have to make them yourself...as EBSchrader has discovered.

I've been interested in how it's done when you don't do it when prompted the first time you start up a Compaq or HP since I have several customers who, in spite of everything I tell them, buy a Compaq or HP anyway.

After much searching I think I've finally found it.

Instructions are on HP & Compaq Desktop PCs - Creating Recovery CDs Using Recovery CD Creator

Edit: I skimmed over that page. Here's the very best part of owning a Compaq or HP. After making the recovery CDs, if you want to make a second set in case the first set get damaged...you can't. Amazing. You can probably copy all the CDs back to the harddrive and burn backup copies that way but most people won't know that.
