Over the past few days my computer has been quite annoying indeed. Starting around say... the 29th, the slugishness began. Every time I type anything, such as in a search box online, in an e-mail, in this very box I'm typing in now, and in IMs, there is a long pause with nothing showing up and no sign that I am even typing. Only after I have stopped typing for more than around 3 seconds do the words I have just typed appear. This is quite the annoyance...

Ontop of that, whenever I open a new IE window, not only is everything about it slow, but when I click the drop down box too soon (as in within 10 seconds of the browser popping up), everything freezes and gets sluggish for a few seconds then jumps to what it's doing again.

I do ctrl-alt-delete and notice that System Idle Processes is taking over 99% of my CPU away. This kind of boggles my mind, so I restart the computer. I go into My Computer, right click the C\ drive and proceed to do a disk cleanup... 10 minutes later it still hasn't begun to show any progress or make any noise, so I cancel. I ctrl-alt-delete once again and it shows that the cleaning manager is now taking 90 somethin% of my CPU away, even after I canceled the cleaning process... so I end it's process. Low and behold, System Idle Processes jumps back to 99%.

So here's what I did... I intsalled the box of Norton Antivirus 2004 that's been on my desk for the past 2 weeks or so. It ran and dedected 9 cases of adware. I told it to delete them all, and the deletes failed according to Norton. So I downloaded the newest version of Lavasoft's Adaware and it finds over 240 and computer, and supposedly quarintines everything. Well now not only can I still not do a disk cleanup, I can't even run Norton Antivirus2004I , and my text is still delayed as is the IE browsers. System Idle processes at this very moment is still at 99%.

To top it all off, starting yesterday my Comcast e-mail through Microsoft Outlook has been giving me errors that it's unable to connect to my POP3 mail server, even though when I run a test in the tools, it says that it finds the server. I have resorted to just checking the mail online, which was the only way I was able to confirm my registration to this website a few minutes ago. I don't know if this is related to the problems above though.

Anyone have any idea what could be goign on and how I could possibly fix it? Hard Drives pace is not decreasing in the least bit, it's just everything is very very slow. Thanks!!

Edit: Also, the 30th when I decided to do something about the sluggishness, I did a search for everything changed or added on the 29th... it found a lot but none of which I thoguht was very relevent except for a few cookies which I deleted.
The only things I know different that I've done the past few days are that I installed UT2K4 on my other HD (not the C\), ran the speech tutorial with headphones for Microsoft's speech program thing in Word... and that's about it. I've run MSCONFIG and shut down everything that even thinks of popping up when windows starts that I know isn't necessary. The problems persist.

What are the numbers showing in disk cleanup after it checks your computer? Don't worry about System Idle, it is supposed to show 98-99% when no processes are running (it's showing the % of your comp that isn't doing anything). Forget MSCONFIG except for the few things that always try to load at startup- go to www.blackviper.com and follow his advice on disabling Services (Control panel/Admin/ Services). Go to IE/Tools/Internet Options and delete history, cookies, and Temp internet files (check delete offline content). Also d/L, update and run Spybot S&D. It will find a lot of stuff AdAware won't. All safe to delete. Also, why not delete the junk AdAware found instead of quaratining it? AdAware's never let me down. See if this helps. I need to add: After you do the above, and empty your Recycle Bin, go to Start/My Computer/Right click C: and click the Tools tab. Run Error Checking and then the Defrag.

System idle is normally that high and its a good thing it is.

Please get Spybot S&D to clear out any spyware.
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=mirrors

Install the program and open it.

Before doing any scanning click Online and Search for Updates .
Put a check mark at and install all updates .
Click Check for Problems nd when the scan is finished have Spybot fix all it finds marked in red .

Then after reboot :
Download 'Hijack This! http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the " scan " button will change into a " save log " button.
Press that, save the log , load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

I ran SpyBot and got rid of a good many thing, restarted and ran it again on restart, then restarted again and ran the hijack thing (without fixing them all). My computer still refuses to do the disk cleanup when I right click the C:\ drive and do properties then disk cleanup... it sits idle forever then when it closes it's still running in the background.

Outlook now works, I'm still having some of the typing problems I Had before (not as bad as before though), everything seems to be running a tad bit smoother though, not totaly perfect.

Every time I run disk cleanup, it still doesn't do anything and just runs forever and even when I cancel it the task manager continues to say that it's using 99% of the CPU (even when it's not running).

Overall, nothing has gotten worse than it was before and some things have gotten better, but it's still not working...

edit: errmm, I take back what I said about some of the smoothness... that's only because I was only running one window. Switching inbetween two windows of any type and between any programs causes quite a delay.

rid your PC of unwanted "temporary" files. These files have been known to generate error messages, cause freezing, or other lockups, especially when they accumulate. They are created during the normal use of your system. Unfortunately, there exists no way to prevent them.

1. Make sure you have no open programs (close Word, Internet Explorer, Datatel, etc.)
2. Click on the Start button, then on Find, then Files or Folders.
3. In the NAMED field, type *.tmp and click on Find Now.
4. As it finds these items, they will be displayed in a box below.
5. Once it's complete, click ONCE on the first file listed, then hold down the SHIFT key and hit the END key simultaneously. Release the keys.
6. This should turn them all blue. Now hit the Delete key. Confirm deletion by saying YES. 7. Close this window.
7. Empty the Recycle Bin.
8. Restart your computer.

The typing problem seems to be fixed for the moment, or at least right now I'm not noticing a problem with it at all, so thats a good thing... problems that still exist though are:

Disk cleanup is still doing the same old stuff, run it and it goes forever without doing anything so I cancel it, ctrl-alt-delete, see that it's still running (I think it's called clnrmngr or something) so I have to end it's process.
Also, when switching from window to window between programs or within programs, tehre is still a delay of about a second or two before the switch takes place.

Actions taken so far:
- Ran Norton Antivirus 2004
- Ran Adaware
- Ran Spybot
- Ran hijackthis (and followed instructions)
- Deleted all *.tmp files manually
- Cleared history
- Deleted all cookies
- Deleted all temporary internet files

I already have a lot of stuff backed up and am willing to format C:\ and just restart things, but if another solution is presented I'd much rather take that then the reformat.
