Help

Trying to set up a peer to peer network using win2k pro through a hub, originally was a very slow connection eventually replaced all the hardware involved, NIC's, cables, Hub. The works, then thought to check out the System Event Logs on both machines, one has no mention of any network problems, the other machine has the following Error message:

27-Dec-01 | 4:33:21 PM | MRxSmb | Error | None | 8003 | N/A | CHILL01 | The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer CHILL02 that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{A9FA3242-D353-447B-9. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

Okay - I am a hardware specialist and dabble in the software support side but this problem has been plaguing me for the last 10 days since I decided to network my 2 machines rather than just laplink data between them.

I have networked multiple Win2K machines on peer to peer networks succesfully over the last 18 months and have had no problems, yet when I try to do it at home, it gives me grief, any body out there who can help, would earn my undying gratitude, as I've been stopped from playing networked games at work (Obvious time wasting) and am going through withdrawal.

It's not really a problem at all because the machines are doing what they are supposed to. One of the PC's on your network always takes the role of master browser. Wwhen one PC shuts down for whatever reason the other will take over that responsibility and once the PC is restarted it might try to take that role once again. YOu can disable that service all together and you will never see it again in the event log.

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\MaintainServerList

Set the value to no for the machines that you don't want to act as a master browser.

The only one in my network at home is my main computer that is never turned off. This one I left set to on.
