Earlier with my Powerbook G4 running Mac OSX I was trying to check the properties (get info) for an image file and the machine was slow to respond. I moved the mouse around, it didn't respond on screen but a short while later all the windows zoomed out and were visible (I have that configured to top left corner) then the screen went completely black and there was no response by pressing the shut down button, or any of the keyboard. The laptop though was making a really loud noise. I decided to take the power cable out and wait for it to run out of charge, then start it again.
I tried that twice, and each time it gets to the spinny clock boot screen and seems to hang so I take the cable out again.
