The main reason I joined this forum was to thank you guys at TSG for being there! I picked up these nasty little vermins around the same time as the other poster got it. Neither Norton or my other virus program could get rid of the little system tray bugger!

So I Googled with the file name and one of the hits was your site. I downloaded SmitFraudFix, followed your instructions and <sweet> it was gone! :) :) :)

I have to tell you how I got the bug so it may help others that encounter the same type of "hook" that I did. I had just uploaded some pictures of my grandkids to my MySpace site (hey, it's not just for kids, ya know!). Right after that I went to check my email at Yahoo. There were 5 or 6 emails, supposedly from MySpace participants, who wanted me to add them to my "friends" list. I clicked on one of them and a second window opened in blazen red, and said something to the effect that this person's "profile" was protected or hidden, and if I wanted to read it I had to click on the window.

Well, having been on the Internet for about 10 years now I really should have known better. As soon as I clicked on the window it blinked and something appeared to download to my computer. That's when the problems started. :(

The bothersome tray icon started blinking and bubbled about every minute warning me of virus intrusion and I need to click it to get the proper software to get rid of it. Well that's when the light went on and I realized my snafu.

I ran my virus program and it found 9! It got rid of 8 but could not remove the bothersome tray icon. However it did tell me the file was cthkpcv.dll. As I said earlier, I Googled it and the rest, as they say, is history....

THANKS so much for being there and helping us keep our computers clean of vermin and vile files! I use mine daily with family history research, some office work, photo restoration/repair, chuch documents, and many other things. Fortunately I have a Maxtor 200Gig aux HD I use to store all my photos and documents on.

While I am retired on a somewhat fixed income, I will surely try to scrape together a little something to donate. I figure it's the least I could do for helping me out....

Oh, BTW, other than sitting there and annoyingly blinking bubbles at me, what else could this vermin have done to my computer?

Thanks again,
Charlie

Hi Buckeye50, Welcome to TSG!!

You should change all of your passwords and watch your bank accounts, credit cards etc.

Feel free to post a hijackthis log if you would like me to view it and suggest removals.

ct,

Thanks for the advice & info. I did go change my passwords especially to all my banking & credit card places. I found a place to download HiJackThis and ran it. Below is the result log of that scan.

This shows my total green-ness on this technical stuff. I have no idea what this log is all about, so I have not deleted or "fixed" anything yet.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Charlie
