I disinstalled Spybot & AVG recently because the virus definitions would not update. This computer also runs AOL security system, powered by McAfee but the virus definitions will not update automatically. I've tried manually but with no success. The virus scan doesn't work either, but when the computer goes into sleep mode, I occasionally get a prompt that a "suspect file" is running on the computer. I was infected by WinAntiVirusPro2006 months ago and thought I cleaned it thoroughly. But when I look in the install/remove section, there is stil an icon for WinAntiVirusPro2006 and I can't delete or remove it. Any assistance is appreciated.

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe.
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.

When the trial period expires it becomes feature-limited freeware but is still worth keeping as a good on-demand scanner.

  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed, select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will run it in safe mode.
  1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning as it may interfere with the scanning process:
  2. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the icon on your desktop.
  3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  4. AVG will now begin the scanning process. Please be patient as this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete, do the following:
  5. If you have any infections you will be prompted. Then select "Apply all actions."
  6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower lef- hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file. This is important).
  8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log along with the logs from the AVG and Panda scans.

AVG will not update. This is the same problem I had before uninstalling it originally. When I click "Start Update," I get a prompt that says "Error: Failed to connect to server update.ewido.net. Is this a firewall problem?

I'm concerned about the O23 - AOL Antivirus Update Service. This recently appeared as an icon on my desktop. The AOL icon on the toolbar will not close either and often times, there are 2 AOL icons on the toolbar, even if no session in running.

Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Don’t do anything with it yet!

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Double click WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient and let it complete.

Reboot back to Normal Mode!

  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Copy and paste WinPFind.txt in your next post here please.

I followed your instructions but the WinP scan freezes. I ran it several times and it freezes instantly when it begins scanning the Win directory folder. I let it run 45 minutes both times and nothing. What next?

I ran it in safe mode several times at first, then tried it in normal mode and the results are the same. The hour glass comes up; the program says its scanning but it doesn't. It freezes each time. What next? and do you see any suspicous activity in the Hijack log?

Just original problem I posted. When the computer goes to sleep, occasionally a McAfee prompt saying it found a "suspicious file" running appears, and asks to run a virus scan. Problem, this stupid AOL Safety & Security Center will not scan for viruses. Nor does it update. I have toolbar icons that can't be closed, and when the computer is shut down, there's usually a file running that has to shut down, which I haven't a clue of what it is. Computer frequently gets the blinks also. The fact that I'm not able to update AVG or run WinPFind makes me weary.
