If someone had a win98se operating system and a win 2000 pro restore disk could they use the disk to upgrade that system so it can become a win 2000 pro?

I highly doubt it's possible but I thought I would ask.

Actually it might just work - but my question would be, why try to upgrade? If you have the restore disk just install W2k! The reason I say this is that my XP home (Gateway version) restore disk will install the OS on any computer because I've done it.

If the "restore disk" belongs to another system, then its not likely that it would work.

"Restore disks" are usually BIOS-keyed to the original system and will not work on different hardware, unlike a full Windows Install or Upgrade CD.

Also if they are Recovery CD's then they may wipe the drive clean and the owner will lose everything on the hard drive. Of course many Recovery CD's only work with the computer they ship with.

 In addition, you would almost surely be violating the EULA for the software.
