What would cause a computer to just turn off or just restart whenever you are not even doing anything on it? My computer has been doing this for the past couple months. Thanks!

Hello:

Three things come to mind:

1) Overheating

2) Overworked power supply

3) virus activity

Let's take this one step at a time, and let's start with the easiest route.

Make sure you have fully update anti-virus software and run a full system scan. Back that up with Trend's Housecall free online scan here: http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_h...?height=160&hostURL=http://www.windrivers.com

Random restarts can also be caused by faulty software or operating system. Do you get any errors or blue screens? If so list them here accurately.

As far as hardware related causes are concerned, you must first give us a profile of your system: How old, what CPU, how much RAM, how much added hardware (extra drives, extra case fans, extra "anything hardware), the power supply power rating.

If you are not sure of the above may I suggest Aida32 , possibly the most comprehensive system profiler out there, and it's free.

A simpler profiler is Belarc Advisor BOth these apps are also valuable for ensuring you know what adapters you have for purposes of diagnosing problems, and also for finding drivers.

This webpage allows you to enter your system's components and it will calculate how much wattage it requires. The rule of thumb is: add up all your components' requirements and multiply by 1.5 to allow for a safe margin: http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
