stop gaps for low memory?

965 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  rugrat
Hi,

I have 128MB SDRAM on my computer and for the last two weeks, using two or more programs, I have had problems with message boxes saying" not enough memory to run", such and such a program "will now shutdown" and crashes, frozen screens. I know its obvious that I need more RAM installed (i'm dreading buying the right RAM and then opening the case,I've not ever done that before). In the meantime though I am wondering if there is anything I can do to free up any of my original RAM or tips to keep it ticking over till I upgrade?

Thanks.

Are you sure there isn't also a hadr drive space problem as well? Anyway, do an alt - ctrl - del and when the window pops up post back with all the programs running in the background. Each one of these uses system memory and can bring you to a halt if there are too many running. A good indication of the number is by looking at the tray next to the clock and seeing how many icons are in there.
Clean up the stuff that starts at boot. Lots of stuff starts and sits there holding RAM when it doesn’t have to. 128Mb RAM is OK for normal multitasking if you clean out the startup. Good instructions with a reference to anything you might find on your startup tab and whether it is a good idea to uncheck it: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm
It would obviously help if you specified the O/S in use, but from the message, I'm guessing it's W98 or ME. Normally, that message actually means you've exhausted the system resource pool, not your actual memory.

The way to fix this problem is to minimize the amount of things you have running at startup, and to reboot occasionally, the W9x O/S is notorious for resource leaks that gradually consume the resource stacks.
Hi,

after pressing crtl alt del the following shows up:

explorer
grokster
magitime
zonealarm
sllights
realplay
vsmon
gmt
cmesys
msmsgs
mm-tray
systray
printray
minilog.

I am using windows ME and i still have half of my 30GB hard drive free.

thanks

Go with Slipe's advice and post your startups, you have some spyware running and there is probably more that does not show up in ctrl/alt/delete.

cmesys spyware
Grokster also contains spyware, Kaaza lite is a better alternative (no spyware)

You may also want to download spybot and see what it finds,

http://spybot.eon.net.au/

SeeYa
Edit, sorry did not realize Slipe's link was not for startuplist 1.5, download it, run it and paste the results.

After starting up your machine, right click on My Computer and click on the Performance tab. You will see the % of remaining system resources there. If that number falls to 35-40%, bad things usually start happening to W9x machines. With all of the stuff you're loading, you don't have much slack. Also, some web sites that run java or active-x will chew up large chunks of resources, and frequently not return all of the space.

If you check this number right after a boot, then several hours of operation and using various applications, you'll find that it continually goes down, even though you close all the extra applications. Nature of the beast...
hi,

this is what startuplist shows:

I do not see any big problems but, you do have a few spyware programs running. Go ahead and run spybot. Read Tony Klein's post in this thread first for better instructions.
