I have a Compaq Presario 5461, and I've had to install a new hard drive (the old one crashed and could not be repaired).

Anyway...I've installed the drive (set to Master), and now the system gets hung up on the opening Red "Conpaq" screen and will not boot anything from the floppy drive or the CD-RW drive (before removing the old drive the system booted from either the floppy or the CD-RW with the emergency disk).

Any ideas about what I can do next would be appreciated.

Thanks....

Oh, and I have checked the BIOS settings and I cannot seem to find a way to have the system auto-detect the new hard drive.

Sounds like some cabling is messed up or you have not configured the new drive in the BIOS. Recheck your cabling, reboot to the BIOS and make sure the BIOS recognizes the new drive.

do you know what the maximum size of drive this machine / bios will support?

I assume you have set bios boot order to boot off CD and then it hangs....

You should be able to go into bios and set the HDD to autodeteck - or manually set it to the size of drive you have- whats the bios type/version.
