I have a Windows Me system & plenty of ram and hard drive space. I also clean out my system of cookies or anything that could slow down my system before I shut it down. My problem is when Windows first starts most of the time all I'm getting is my wallpaper & the hour glass. I wait to see if it is going to finish and when it does not, I have to do a manual shut down. Most of the time this works because scan disk comes on and does its job but just today even scan disk was hanging & I had to manual shut down again. I have recently done a defrag & a complete scan disk. what could be the problem

You may have a virus or are infected with spyware. Do you regularly run Antivirus and anti-spyware programs ?

You've probably got an infestion of spyware and other "nasties", and you've probably got a bloated startup load. Are you making use of Ad-aware SE Personal 1.05 and Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 to detect and get rid of them?

Make sure to delete everything that appears when you do a search in the hard drive of:

*.TMP

C:\TEMP\*.*

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.*

Download and unzip HijackThis 1.99.0 in a folder that you create for it, run a scan and save the log, then post the entire contents of the log here.

All 3 utilities are free and can be downloaded from the spyware tools section at http://www.majorgeeks.com. Post a log only after you've installed, run their update function, and done a scan with both Ad-aware and Spybot.
