For the past 2 weeks, my computer has taken much longer than usual to boot up. Any ideas what I might be able to do about it?

Hi Hatcherca,

1) Always a good idea to run an online virusscan: Trend Micro HouseCall

2) As Beach51 already said: let us know what programs are loading automatically as Windows starts:

Go to Start/run, and type Msinfo32, followed by OK.
Go to Software Environment/Startup Programs.
Now click Edit/'Select all', and then 'copy'
Paste the contents in your post.

3) Scan for spyware with Ad-Aware.
First let's have a look at your startup proggies, though, as in '2)'.
It's best to proceed in that order.

Greetz,

This is what was copied when I followed your instructions. I am using Win ME. I did download a Memokit that was supposed to speed up my computer. It didn't work.

Well i dont see any spyware, which is the good news. But you have way to many programs running at startup.Go to this site and you can see what you need and dont need running.

www.rselby.com/Windows.html

When you get to this site just go down to msconfig, and follow to startup programs.Follow Ricks advice on what you need running.

Let us know if this helps.

Might also be a good idea to follow Tony's suggestion about Ad-Aware 5.6.Its a good program to have and its free.

oops,or you can just follow Tony's advice.:D

Ok, I've unchecked per your suggestion and it starts up much faster now. Does it matter that I get a prompt saying "you are using selective startup for troubleshooting your system"?

Many thanks
