I tried cleaning a family computer that has been giving us problems for a long time. I finally got rid of the virus that kept causing problems. At least I thought I did. Now whenever I boot up the start menu does not show up. Any suggestions?

Are you able to boot into safe mode and see if it shows?

try this

log on as the administrator
start/run

copy and paste this into run

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll


reboot the computer

Meaning, before you get to the desktop there USED to be a Start Menu?

Or, after you get to the desktop, the Start button no longer appears?

Or, the Start button is there, and when you click on it, nothing appears?

After I get to the desktop, the Start button doesn't appear.

Is it JUST the Start button?

IE: Does the task bar appear at the bottom? And the icons in the bottom right (clock, etc.)?

If you have no start button or task bar try this

open task manager

Ctrl+Alt+del

file/ new task

type in
explorer.exe

if that does not work open task manager and go here

again. file/ new task/ copy and paste
