Hi, I hope someone can help. I have a DELL Dimension 4700 and I'm running Windows XP SP2. My problem is that everytime I put my PC into standby mode it turns back on after about 10 minutes which is a real pain. I have done a virus check and cleaned the registry but to no avail. Any ideas ?

Usually a piece of hardware preventing this. Can we check your settings first though...does bios set to user define? Are there any wake-ups checked as enable in bios which should not be. Home/Office desk chosen in Control Panel, Power Options and set a time for monitor, hard drive and system for sleep...if so what do you have set?

Hi Teck and Rich-M. I have already checked my power settings and there is no time set for the HD and system to sleep only for the monitor after 15 minutes. The advanced tab is set such that when I press the 'sleep button' on my PC it goes into standby. I'm not sure how I find out whether Bios sets to user define ?

I have an optical mouse and sometimes when I walk by the computer it picks up enough vibration I guess to start computer back up. It doesn't take much, can blow on it to start it.

Hello and thank you all for your help  . The problem lay with my mouse (XPSP2 :) ). Everytime I put the mouse back into it's 'cradle' the PC would turn back on again . When I just left the mouse on the desk the PC would not come on so it appears it doesn't like being put back in it's charger for some reason  . It wasn't me banging the desk or anything as I was sitting here quitely waiting for something to happen. Maybe it has just developed a fault . So thanks once again  .

Put mouse in cradle then activate stand-by, or activate, then immediately put mouse in cradle before it gets to fully activated stand-by. In stand-by mode, all you do to wake up is touch keyboard or move mouse.
