SSD OS Clone

If you clone the drive everything on it will be transferred to the SSD.

Also the SSD has to have the capacity to store all the data on the HDD.

First, have you checked your computer's hardware to see if it supports an SSD? You may use Crystal Disk Info software portable for this.
Clone the entire HDD to SSD as this is the most reliable method in which to replace your HDD with an SSD.
Second, use your HDD as an external drive or a second internal drive to store information on.
After installing your fully cloned SSD you may connect your HDD as an external HDD with a 'SATA 3 to USB adapter cable' about 8-dollars on AMAZON, then delete you OS on the HDD and any other data you wish to delete from you old HDD.
Good lucky with this, your computer will boot and run about 4 times faster than before.

So I can't just clone some things and move then to the ssd?

If you want to clone, a clone is an exact copy of the drive ie what is on the drive is what will be on the new drive. What you could do would be to delete whatever you do not want and then clone. I think crucial uses acronis to do the clone. There should be a link on the support page to download this program. Make sure you read and follow ALL of the steps outlined on the support page regarding the task of cloning the drive.

An alternative approach would be to do a fresh installation of your operating system onto the ssd, and then reinstall the programs and games you will be using. Then use your hdd as your data drive and save files, music, pictures etc. to it.

If you use this I would download the latest updated and run it from a boot disk and not windows for best results.

Cloning a drive means you clone the whole drive os, data, hardware codes and setup everything otherwise your new drive would not be compatible with your computer.

Ezgig allows you to just clone your operating system and a few games, but it is more complicated doing that and you have to know what folders to safely deselect. It is safer to clone the whole thing and uninstall what you want to get rid of after. After cloning ,you can put your old drive on the shelf for back up.
