SSD into a Laptop

Back in April I bought an asus laptop with model number q553ub and it runs great. I have never upgraded a laptop and am looking into replacing the 1 tb harddrive with a solid state drive. I saw a recent post and I believe I understand the process after I have the SSD. I'm currently using around 350 gbs of space on the laptop, but I'm thinking of just moving windows, games and most used applications onto the SSD and keeping the hard drive as a backup storage for movies/music. My questions are is it possible to remove the cd/dvd drive and use that slot for either the SSD or the hard disk drive backup and if so what do I need in order to do that? Also I know its a dumb question but does the size of the SSD matter or can I just get a 250 GB SSD and get the same benefit as a larger one.

A bigger SSD may be faster but that depends on the model and design.

There are adapters to use the optical drive as a tray for a SSD/HDD like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Protronix-Optical-Drive-Universal-12-7mm/dp/B004XIU4T2
But you will need to measure the height of the DVD drive, some laptops use a 9.5mm drive and not a 12.7mm drive so you would need a 9.5mm adapter instead like this: https://www.amazon.ca/JacobsParts®-9-5mm-Optical-Drive-Adapter/dp/B004XIUQYA

Or just get a 480GB or bigger SSD or store some of the stuff on an external drive. You can place the old drive into an enclosure like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ATCH&Description=usb+3.0+2.5"&N=-1&isNodeId=1
thank you for the quick reply and the info this is exactly what i needed!
You can use 250gb ssd, and buy it an external drive with USB 3 connection.. Which you would store (only) pictures, music and not frequently used but large files (like contents if download folder).
I might choose this depending on throughput of your laptops sata(?) connection vs USB 3 throughput.
