Spyware Problem

Hey All,

I've done all I can to rid my machine of spyware--ran the latest build of Ad Aware, Spy Bot, etc.--but I haven't purged it of all the little nasties. Problem is, I'm not a tech-minded person, so in Hijack This, I don't know what's suspicious and/or safe to axe. Here's my log file:

Well, there's not much of anything that I see on your log. What problems are you still having?

One thing you may want to do......you have an outdated version of HJT. Just in case, install the latest version and post log again.

:)
Occasionally, my IE start page is replaced with another, CoolWeblike page. Typically I run Adaware et al, and the page disappears, though I'm not sure where or if it has been completely removed, given that it pops up again, seemingly at random, even if I haven't used IE or been on the Internet.
After downloading the latest version of CWS and HJT, my home page was once again hijacked. Here is the log file:

What concerns me most is are the RO lines 1 and 2 and R1 line. That is not my homepages web address, and even after running the various protections, this URL still shows up on the log file. Can I just delete these lines, and by doing so, will I be rid of this pest?

Yes, let's take those entries out:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = mk:mad:MSITStore:C:\WINDOWS\start.chm::/start.html

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = mk:mad:MSITStore:C:\WINDOWS\start.chm::/start.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = mk:mad:MSITStore:C:\WINDOWS\start.chm::/start.html

Close your browser, check the entries in HJT, click Fix and REBOOT.

May not hurt to run CWShredder, just in case:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

After downloading, open the application, click Fix (not scan) and let it do it's thing.

There's nothing else amiss on your log. Feel free to post another log if you want.

:)

I took out the offending lines last night, but they were back again this morning. I took them out again, ran all of the anti-spyware programs, and things seem back to normal...for now. If it comes back again, I'll post the log. In the meantime, thanks buckaroo.
You're welcome! :up:

If they come back, run your removal applications in safe mode, or "clean boot" in XP. Here's instructions:
