Spyware-computer slower than normal

Hi,
I am running Windows XP with SP2 on a fairly powerful laptop. Pentium IV 2.67 GHz with 512 MB RAM. This is to show that the computer should complete most tasks rather painlessly.
For a few months my computer has been running slowly, and freezes periodically for only a few seconds. I have done more than my share of virus and spyware scans, and have removed everything. I think I have found the problem, but cannot seem to fix it.
Housecall (trend micro) finds between 1 and 10 different spywares with each scan, but always finds SPYW_SOFTOMATE.A. Sometimes it says it has removed SPYW_SOFTOMATE.A and sometimes it is labeled "unremoveable". Regardless, it always shows up in the scan results and housecall seems to be one of the few programs to detect it. I am not sure if this is the cause of my problems, but it seems to be. Also, periodically the computer slows for a few seconds while a blank window opens, puts a blank bar on the task bar, and then closes. This is the only symptom besides slowness. I hope you can help. Thank you!

Hi jagster1254, Welcome to TSG!! :)

You should post a log for us to review.
Click on this link: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.

Close out any open browsers and launch the program.
Click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile.
The log will open in Notepad
Go to Edit,Select All, Edit, Copy
Come back to this thread
And press Ctrl+V to paste the log into the thread.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Authority Hosts] lsasser.exe

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Restart in safe mode

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Now click "Apply to all folders" Click "Apply" then "OK".

Go to control panel, add/remove programs and remove Viewpoint Manager

Delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsasser.exe

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator (Repeat for all user names)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".

Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.

Empty your recycle bin.

Reboot and post another log.

I followed all instructions, but there are two things to note:
1. When I ran HJT and deleted the files as directed, Microsoft Anti-spyware immediately informed me that Cool Web Seach was trying to install, and i blocked it and continued.
2. Once in safe mode, the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsasser.exe was not there.

Here is the log.

Download AdAware SE Personal: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ad-Aware_SE_Personal_d506.html

Install the program and launch it.

On the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

In the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

To start the scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Reboot and post another log.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

* Run Ewido:

I did everything u asked and it went well, but i can't say that the computer is running normally. It may be helpful to note that at a give time there are 60+ (some times up to 70) processes in the task manager-most seem legit but I am not the one to decide that. Thanks.

My normal is around 55 and that is without any print services. I don't have ipod or itunes and I keep my O16's to a minimum. You have quite a bit of photo and music items running and if you are not using them I would suggest going into the program and setting them to run on demand instead of in startup.

Hi,
Ok, thanks. At least I know that there are no rouge programs running. Sorry, I was away for the weekend. Do you have anymore suggestions on what I can do to stop that random window? Also, I saw in CCleaner there is an option for "fix issues". I checked, and it found plenty of issues but I didn't click "fix" yet because I wasn't sure if I should. Thanks again

~Jordan

ALT+Print Screen will put it on your clipboard. Open MSpaint and paste it there. Trim it down if need be then upload it as an attachment. Save it as a jpg if you can that makes it smaller in file size.

Also when it's running open task manager, CTRL+ALT+Delete, and see if you see something unusual running.
