I have spilled water on my laptop keyboard(Lenovo Thinkpad Z60m), and attempted to dry it out and then the picture clouded over black. I dried it with a hairdryer a bit and rebooted it and now the picture is there but extremely faded, mostly black, yet the operations of the computer are all wroking fine.
What has been damaged? Will leaving it to dry longer help or is it something that is going to need to be replaced.
Thanks in advance. :)

Well, I'd suggest taking it to a repair shop. What I'd do, because I'm able, is to open up the LCD panel and dry it out. Of course, depending on how agressive you got with the hair dryer, you may have killed the LCD.

Just once, I wish someone would come here BEFORE they attempt a repair and add insult to injury.

The LCD is not killed because it did go back on for me briefly, it did the same "clouding" thing where the picture came back in one corner first and then it all came back. Then a few seconds later it went to black again.
Then this morning when I turned it on, as it was booting, the Think Vantage logo and loading screens showed up perfectly in color, but as soon as the fingerprint login box came up, the picture faded to almost black. I can still login, and when I do, I see the outline of my MSN window pop up and the outline of other boxes, but they are extremely faded into almost all black.

It is difficult to come online to find a solutiion when you do not have a computer to use. I had to come to the University to use a computer and I didn't want to leave the water just sitting there, I had to make use of what I have, it's not like I have air in a can sitting in my dorm room unfortunately.

I will get it into a repairshop eventually, but it is a bad time right now as I have exams this and next week and am travelling out of country next week. I do have some experience with electronics so I was hoping it was something I could manage to repair on my own.

Maybe, is it possible that a problem with the wiring or chip for the backlight could cause not just the whole thing to go, but a part to stay lit briefly?

From what it seems, it is a problem with a backlight. Especially seeing you said the picture was perfect when it lit up briefly.

That is what LCD's do, have a VERY fait outline of everything. If you shut a laptop's lid and it just turns off the screen, not hibernate, you will notice the same effect. it just turns off the backlight.

Backlights are available on ebay, and you might be able to fir it yourself. However, it will probably void your warranty if you open it.

Thanks for the reply again, jackdw. I am fairly certain now it is the backlight. If I were to take it into a shop, do you know approximately the cost and time it would take to get it fixed.

To be honest, I have no idea.
I assume your in the US and prices are different. Even after conversion. UK usually works out more expensive!

Well, JohnWill, thats the nature of most people in the USA.
1- We want to FIX it our selfs.
2- We really don't want to call for help.
3- Maybe a bad trait, but most Americans want to be self sufficient and most are.
4- Do you think that because you are computer literate that everyone should understand what you post?????
6- YOU said "What I'd do, (because I'm able), is to open up the LCD panel and dry it out."
7- YOU also said "Just once, I wish someone would come here BEFORE they attempt a repair and add insult to injury.
IS THAT HELP ??
My number 5---Is the above helpful to the one who asked the question ? You sound like a pompous *** .
8- Bar me if you wish.

You assume facts not in evidence. In point of fact, taking apart a laptop is not for everyone, which was the point I was trying to make.

As far as your opinion of me, I don't really care.

Wow I am sorry this thread turned into some kind of argument...
Thank you all for your advice, the laptop is actually working now perfectly fine, I guess whatever the problem it was just wet and not actually fried.
Extra good because I am actually not in the US, in the UK, and I'm guessing it would have cost a lot to get it fixed.

Things come to those who wait........By-the-way don't feel bad spills on Laptop keyboards happen very often.....the biggest problem is people turn them on too soon just to see if their fried......and infact fry them.

I'm glad it wasn't in your case
