If you feel adventurous, try this:

Make a backup of the Registry, just in case.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools

Right-click on the Shared Tools key and create a new key named Proofing Tools {spell it exactly as shown}

Right-click on the Proofing Tools key and create a new key named Spelling

Right-click on the Proofing Tools key and create a new key named Grammar

Now, follow the instructions from the link in the post above.

I have been told the spellchecker won't work in XP with Word 97, but isn't there a workaround?
That's not exactly true,

I have XP and Word 97 and the Spell Check in Word 97 works fine. What DOESN'T WORK is that if you have OUTLOOK EXPRESS 6 on your computer and you are running OFFICE 97 with XP as your OS, the SPELLCHECK IN OUTLOOK EXPRESS WILL NOT WORK. You can however, copy or cut the document into Word 97 and spellcheck it from there.

Why doesn't OE 6's spellcheck work in conjunction with Office 97/XP? The reason is because some code for the spellchecker was updated beginning with Office 2000. Microsoft never updated this code with any updates for Office 97. Therefore:

1.) If you have Windows XP and use Outlook Express 6 as your e-mail client, you must be running Office 2000 or higher for OE 6's spellcheck to work.

2.) There is some registry code that can be modified to make OE 6's spellcheck work with Office 97 on Windows XP. WARNING!!!! DO NOT GO INTO REG EDIT (EDIT THE REGISTRY) UNLESS YOU REALLY HAVE EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH REGISTRY FILES AND KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING...DON'T GO IN. (This should only be done by a cetified computer tech or under the guidence of a computer tech.)

3.) If you want a workaround, use Word 97 to spellcheck your OE 6 e-mail, or switch to a different e-mail program, or upgrade to Office 2000 or higher to make OE 6's spellcheck work again.

stattad,

I don't use Word 97, so I'm not sure if this will work or not.

It should not harm anything to add the keys. If Windows isn't looking for them, it will ignore them. Having said that, this is why I suggest making a backup of the Registry before trying this.

If you don't feel completely confident in making changes in the Registry, don't do it. I'm sure there will be other suggestions offered.

To Jack 1000--
I don't use any version of OE or Office 2000, so now do I still have a chance?

I've never edited the registry, but I backed it up and it seems pretty straightforward...

Ok Stattad,

Are YOU running Office 97 on Windows XP with spellcheck problems, or did you just hear from someone that the spellcheck doesn't work in XP if used with Office 97.

If the spellcheck doesn't work for you in Office 97 and you feel confident and know what to do, add those registery lines above. I WOULD STILL SAY, go through this with a computer tech person, because all it takes is one little line of code to be entered wrong and you COULD be not only reinstalling Office, but your whole OS.

BTW There is a whirlwind of help in Windows XP located in the Start Menu under "Help and Support" You can often find step by step information from Microsoft and your computer's manufactuer pertaining to a situation that you want to find more information about, or based on the problem you are having. For the record, what brand of computer do you own?

I have been searching Microsoft's site for a few days to no avail. I have a brand new Fujitsu laptop. I don't have Office 97 installed. I have Word 97 and Excel 97 stand alone installed.

My copy of Word 97 has the spell checking area grayed out. I saw somewhere on the internet that it doesn't work without that "fix". I'm just not crazy about going into the registry if it's a guess.

I agree with you and wouldn't go into the registry eaither. What I would do is see if you can find a deal on say Word 2003 and Excell 2003. (At least Word 2003.) Go to Walmart, Comp USA, Best Buy, any place that sells computer software, or just go to a store's website and get an updated version of Word online. (also Excel if you want.) Than uninstall the Word 97 and Excel 97 when you get new versions of the programs. See what the price is for Word XP if you want. I was told not to get Word XP and if I wanted to upgrade my Office 97, to go to Office 2003. It might be a bit pricey, but at least you'll have a reasonably updated version of the program with a working spellcheck.

Are we talking about backing up "Regedt32.exe"? If so, why does it have a date of 8/4/2004 when I installed a new program today?
Not me,

I am talking about purchasing updated years for those programs, uninstalling the old versions through Add/Remove programs and installing the new version so that you'll have a working spellcheck.

stattad,

Regedt32.exe (and regedit.exe) are Registry editor programs. What I suggest is backing up the Registry itself. In Windows XP this is very easy.

Create Restore Point:
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Select Create a Restore Point, click Next.
Enter a description and click Create, then Close.

Restore to previous state:
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Select Restore my computer to an earlier time, click Next.
Select appropriate Restore Point from the list, click Next, then Next again.
The computer will reboot and a 'Restoration Complete' page will come up. Click OK.

I went into Regedit and made the changes (it was easy), but it still doesn't work.
Hi Stattad,

I would just uninstall your Word 97 and get a later version of Word and install that. This can be Word 2003 or Word XP, or get Office 2003 or Office XP.

( I assume that you are running Windows XP. If not, get a later year of Word or Office and install that. Be sure to uninstall the old version before installing the new version.)
