Hi Everybody,
I recently inherited an old Core i3 system circa 2015 and it runs as slow as molasses. So I added an SSD. But performance is still lacking as compared to my Ryzen 7. So here are the things you can do to speed things up.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Click on Settings > System > About
Click on Advanced System Settings
Click on Performance section Settings button
In Visual Effects tab, choose Adjust for best performance.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Still inside Settings, go to Personalization > Colors
Turn off Transparency Effects
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Too many startup tasks will slow down the system. Start Task Manager by right clicking on the Task Bar.
Then go to the Startups tab, and Right Click disable any programs that you do not need to run at startup automatically.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows File Explorer watches the files you access and provide Quick Links to them. It may be convenient, but it slows down the system.
Here are the steps to disable Quick Access in File Explorer:
Open File Explorer. You can do this by pressing the Windows key + E on your keyboard.
Click on the File menu, then select "Change folder and search options".
In the “Privacy” section at the bottom, disable the “Show frequently used folders in Quick access” option.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes File Explorer may run slowly when it's indexes are corrupt.
Here are the steps to delete and rebuild the search index in Windows:
Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
Type control panel and hit Enter to open Control Panel.
From the top right corner of the window, set the View by option to Large icons or Small icons.
Click on "Indexing Options".
In the window that opens, click the “Advanced” button.
In the Index Settings tab, click the “Rebuild” button under Troubleshooting.
Click on the prompt to confirm.
The indexing operation will now commence. Click the “Close” button when the indexing completes & exit Control Panel. Keep in mind that rebuilding the index might take a long time to complete. At any time, you can click the button to stop rebuilding the index
This will delete the existing search index and trigger the indexing service to start file indexing from scratch. As Windows 10 reminds you, it might take a long time until file indexing is complete and during that time you might experience missing or incomplete search results.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes a system may run slowly because something internal to Windows is corrupted. Right click on Start, select Windows Powershell as Admin (or Terminal as Admin on Win 11). Then type in
sfc /scannow
And wait for it to finish. It will repair Windows.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On some systems, it is faster to issue a 'shutdown' command than to wait for a 'restart'.
Right click on the desktop and choose New > Shortcut. Then paste in the command 'shutdown -s -t 00' and next create a name for the file. You can change the icon by Right clicking on the shortcut and choose Properties then Change icon.
