It appears that a number of my valid threads in the Tech-Related News forums have been closed due to spamming (I suppose) by a new member/members targeting certain threads.

In one, the Mod left me with the impression that the spammer's account was not closed, and he could contact the Mod about the incident. See post#5 in thread LED Efficiency at Half the Cost in the Tech-Related News Forum as an example.

Why is not the policy to close accounts of spammers, delete the spam post, and for the Mod to post in the thread that the spammers acount has been closed - and NOT to close the valid thread instead of delete the spam post, and close the thread?

At the very least, if a spammer's account is not closed, then do the temporary thing that was done with CD debaters and put them into a time-out jail for TSG, but don't leave them with an active account for the violation and close the thread.

P.S. Request you reopen my valid threads in the Tech-Related News forum.

Seems like the spammer that was targeting Ozzie .. Just moved on to you after Ozzie's post was closed.
I was wondering about the logic of closing a thread for this possible reason.
Is is easier to kill a spammer .. Than it is for them to create Spam ??
If we know where they are targeting .. and kill them .. Maybe they'll get tired of this stupid game.

tom, the reason that we closed them was due to spammers hitting them. I left a note in there to pm me if you want stuff added.

The spammers accounts are banned; usually the policy is to leave the thread open, but due to the deluge of spammers that have been hitting the tech news section in the past week, threads are temporarily being closed.

Again, let me know which thread you want re-opened and we can do it.

thanks,

v

they were all different spammers, noyb..........different IP's as well, so we can't block the IP from them. We close the account and manage it the best we can.

I figured .. But didn't know about different ISPs.
Just wondering about letting them ruin one post .. Than having to chase them around.
All depends on which is less work for you mods .. and the fastest method.

To address your reference to post no. 5 Tom, that one was not recognized as spam right away so the post was just deleted and the account was not disabled. It was thought that they had just posted in the wrong place. The thread was being hammered and some can and do get missed or wrongly identified. We don't want to jump on all new members who post something that may seem a little out of place and assume they are spammers. But new members who post spam are nuked immediately (as soon as we know about them).

And the closures were meant to be temporary to stop the bombardment and that was also mentioned there. We'll try reopening them later on today and see what happens. :)

One would only wish. :(:(

Very few people ever read that junk, and does nothing but create heartache and effort for moderators everywhere.

But... it doesn't cost them anything but a few minutes, and so they think if even one person sees it, it's worth it I guess.
