sound

i have two problems, the first is that the sound on my computer sometimes decides to go very scratchy and muffled. i have noticed that if i switch the speakers on before the computer then the problem goes away (although it has been known to come back mid-session after doing this). Does anyone know why this happens? if it is going to be about soundcards then the less technical the better please.
i have also posted earlier about my computer freezing up randomly- whilst on the net, whilst using excel, whilst listening to music, anytime. Someone suggested that my computer is running too many programs (although system resources say 62% left of 240MB of RAM when I look at Performance). Nevertheless I do have both Lotus smartsuite and M. Office and I think there may be a conflict or something (also Smartsuite seems to be on all the time) so I would like to know how to uninstall Lotus. Also please bear in mind that in doing this i don't want to mess up MsConfig (Lotus loads up automatically with the computer). I hope someone can help or can even understand the explanation of the problem.
thanks
steve

Here is a site to help get a little better understanding of how resources work.

It is a good idea to have as few prgrams as possible when you start up and are trying to troubleshoot a freeze problem. You can always put them back the way they were when the problem is diagnosed.
