Well you are on the right track. If you have some specs as to your system, CPU speed, amount of RAM, and DVD model this would help narrow problem down. Also, what application do you use for playback? And are the DVDs burned , rented, ...?
But as with any mechanical device, use takes its toll. It could be a worn gear, or belt. Also, are you running latest firmware for your device?
