I tried a shareware package that was supposed to capture streaming audio (in this case, NPR's "Car Talk"). Ever since then (it didn't work, incidentally) I get not a peep out of my PC's speakers although Norton Utilities assures me that everything is fine.

Check the device manager for sound card properties,you may need to get a new driver.
