Ok. MisterEd, i have looked there and I have no option for HDMI there, it only shows me headphones. This is the same every where I look, settings, hardware etc, no HDMI option. The monitor is recognized as PnP but no speakers or HDMI.

Hi Couriant, the cable is standard HDMI that was supplied with the monitor. I have swapped it out and tried 2 other cables and it is the same,,no sound. The monitor is Acer 32 WQHD--ET2 series.
I know the monitor speakers work as it has a vga socket and when used together with additional sound cable speakers work fine. When i use HDMI from Nvidia 9300 GE to monitor, the monitor seems to stop that option to use sound cable.
Any Ideas?

I should have asked before but will now. Are you sure your Acer monitor have an internal speaker? Not all monitors do.

The following demonstrates the principle. The details for your setup will be a little different. If you don't see something similar there is something wrong with your setup.

Here are some screenshots I made a couple years ago when I connected my Acer laptop to my ASUS VE228 monitor with an HDMI cable.

Normally the laptop audio outputs to the internal speakers. If I right-click on the little speaker I will see Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) selected.

However when I connect the ASUS monitor I see a second choice called 1 - VE228 (AMD High Definition Audio Device). I select this second choice when I want the audio to go through HDMI to the monitor's internal speakers.

If I right-click on the little speaker and select Sound in the list I get the Sound dialog. If I then select the Playback tab I see all the possible output device even the one not being used. Again the output for HDMI audio is something like 1 - VE228 (AMD High Definition Audio Device).

I am not finding the monitor as you wrote, but I do see an Acer ET322QU 31.5" WQHD LED LCD Monitor?

Judging by this post from Acer's community board, it may be that the sound configuration needs to be done by the graphics card (not that I have seen this myself) software as the monitor may not support mixed audio. Do you have any graphic card software for the computer?

This video says if you don't see an option for HDMI audio for monitor then try reinstalling the Nvidia driver.

Making HDMI Audio work with my Nvidia card

You can go to Nvidia and search for the latest driver. Search for GeForce 9 Series / Windows 10 64-bit

Here is the same monitor except I just used it with my desktop computer with an Nvidia RTX 3060Ti graphics card.

1. Right-click on little speaker and select Sounds in list.

2. Playback audio is by default to the computer Speakers

3. Scroll down to audio for the VE228 monitor. After that is selected click on Set Default.

4. The default is now is audio for VE228. Note this default is only when monitor is connected. When the monitor is disconnected the audio returns to the computer speakers.
