I recently bought a new custom PC from a local store, and every part of it worked fine except for some problems with recording from a microphone. when I plug in my headset into the corresponding jack on the front of my PC, it does not record from me mic. Instead, it records sounds from my speakers (for example, if I'm playing a movie, it will record the sounds from the movie, not from my headset.) Here is what my sounds mixer looks like:

Could it be a problem with the sound card? Any easy way to fix it without having to bring it back to the store for repairs?

Thanks,
TPM~

Realtek is really bad for recording (from past experience). I would try using a stand alone mic to see if that helps at all. But in reality I would disable your sound card and get a new one. Right now I use a Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme it's a 7.1 card with optical in/out....very nice and for under $70 CAD.

Just wondering, is there any reason Realtek has this problem? I would think they would fix it by now... but anyway, so I would need a device that plugs in via USB instead of through the normal Microphone jack? I'm on a bit of a budget, so are there any decent sound cards you can recommend that aren't too high up there in price? I'm still paying back money for this computer I have gotten, sadly.

The Realtek card itself is not bad; but the quality is simply lacking because it is "on board" as opposed to more modern component sound cards. You can pick up a cheap mic at any computer store for under $10. My concern was because you mentioned that you had a headset (with head phone(s) and a mic part) that isolating the mic itself may rule out an issue with the headset. Plus I would also try using the mic in the back and NOT use the front panel. See if that helps.

If all you are doing is very basic stuff then a new card is likely not the answer.
