I have been using this burner -- with absolutely no problems -- for a little more than a year.

All of a sudden, I tried to burn a mp3 disk (using Roxio) and got this message:

"The Disc in the recorder is not the proper media for this project. Insert a blank CD or a CD with enough free space to record the project."

There is nothing wrong with the blank (Sony) disks. They work fine in my computer at work.

I also tried burning with Nero and got the same result.

The burner does not seem to be able to recognize the disk. After inserting a disk, I hear a clicking sound. Plus, I do not get the usual prompt that asks me what I want to do with the disk.

Can this problem be fixed? And, if so, how? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for the response.

No, CDs won't play in it either.

I spoke with a friend last night who, like you, suggested that it might need cleaning. So, I will get one of those cleaning disks.

Like you, he also suggested that if the cleaning doesn't work, it just might be worn out.

I would describe my use of the burner as regular -- but not heavy. I just think these things should last more than a year.

I'll let you know if the cleaner works. If it doesn't, I will probably have to call one of those geek services to replace it, since I don't feel confident it my ability to do it myself.

Cleaning seldom helps.

That really doesn't mean much when trouble shooting.

Seeing as it doesn't read either, go into Device Manager and find the Sony, right click on it and choose Uninstall then re-boot. See if that fixes it.

Nope. Didn't work. Any other suggestions? Please? Before I buy/try one of those cleaning disks?
