Hi there ,Im looking to upgrade my pc ,mainly the processor motherboard and ram. . The thing is i really dont know the first thing about this stuff and would really apreciate any advice you people can give me.

Here is my specs,

P4 2.2ghz
40gb harddrive (dont know make or model)
1gb of unbranded cheap ram
9800xt graphics card
Soundbalster live 5.1 sound card
and i have absolutly no idea what make my motherboard is
its a medion cybermaxx pc

Its a good pc and all been working fine, since its birth 2 years ago ive upgraded the graphics card and ram..i dare not tred any further so when i get the stuff for this upgrade i will just take my pc to ashop and ask them to do it :).

Ok i was planning on getting an amd athlon64 processor, this one http://www.pcwcomponentcentre.co.uk/invt/ada3400axbox

Is that a good choice?, would that be better than my current pentium 4 2.2 processor?

Or is there a better value or performace card in this range?
http://www.pcwcomponentcentre.co.uk...&icat=ba&bsref=componentcentre&temp=prodlist2

Now with the motherboard it gets trickier, I know with processors there just 2 main competitors amd and pentium but with motherboards i turely have no idea what would be a good board.
I know that i will need one that is amd processor compatable, but what else would it need to be compatable with?, my graphics card?, my ram or harddrive?, if its it my harddrive then thats even worse considering i dont know what make it was.
would this be a good motherboard for my needs?

or would there be a better one in the range of these 5 pages

And lastly i would be looking for some new ram, i was told corsair are a good make and have heard there name a few time so i will probably go with them but apart i dont know what all this ddr and what not mean, would this ram be good and would it fit any of the motherboards above?
http://www.pcwcomponentcentre.co.uk/invt/hv1024twinx3700pt

Also if i have 1gb of unbranded cheap ram would it be worth upgrading to the same size 1gb of ram even tho its a better make ie corsair?

thanks for any help you can give me

If it's working fine, and your satisfied, I wouldn't upgrade it.. It's a pretty good setup and upgradeing will only go so far economically.

Thanks for the reply but i AM going to be upgrading so im just looking for advice as to these products i listed being any good and any advice in genrel about upgrading?, will my harddrive get wiped and lose all my stuff?.

my pc is good but im a big gamer and use it to play all the latest games, right now it can struggle of some of the top end games, i was thinking it was the processor so i was going to upgrade that to a p4.3.4 but heard that these amd athlon 64`s outperform them for gamin, so then if i get one of them i would need a new processor ,and so i thought i would get some better ram while im at it :). so would one of they amd athlons be better than a p4 3.4?

If you have the money, no one is able to stop you from spending it. (gotta trademark it) :)

Since you're a more of a gamer than anything else, I'd recommend socket939 AMD64 3200+ or faster chip and MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. They will not disappoint you. However, Doom3 WILL lag anything. Even 6800 GT or Ultra OC or twin 6600. If you can't afford them, find their 754 equivalents. Not as good.

If your RAM is PC3200/DDR-400, keep it. Geil is the new favorite. Low latency would be prefered.

Go Start > Progs > Access. > System. > Sys. Info > see your hardware.

thanks for the help, using your advice on a 939 socket i have picked out these 3 parts,

The processor
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz - 512kb Cache - S939pin Processor

http://www.pcwcomponentcentre.co.uk/invt/ada3500bibox

The motherboard
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe - mainboard - ATX - nForce4 SLI

http://www.simply.co.uk/productinfo...e_nF4_S939_4D_2PEG_2PE_3P_SATAR_SND/index.htm

and the ram
Corsair XMS - Memory - 512 MB x 2 - DIMM 184-PIN - DDR - 400 MHz / PC3200

http://www.simply.co.uk/productinfo...air_XMS3200_1GB_2x512MB_DDR_CAS2_PT/index.htm

So would these 3 parts be compatable?,
if they are whats the chances of it not being compatable with my harddrive or stuff,

The processor says something about an nvidea chipset, does that mean it wont take my ATI graphics card?

ATI video cards work just fine with NVidia chipsets, no problem there. But your current video won't work with this board becuase it only supports the new PCI-Express and does not have AGP.
