I have the free Zone Alarm ver# 5.5.062.004 (latest?) and after running a secrurity scan at Norton's site and Steve Gibson' site, BOTH found that port 1028 is wide open. Anyone know how to close it in ZA? Thanks :) .......Dave

Hey Dave. The free version of ZA does not have the option to open or close a specific port. But my guess is that either your are using a router or your modem does NAT (short for Network Address Translation), am I right? If so, then it is your modem or router that is being tested by the port scans and not your computer with ZA.

BillC: It would seem that I had a couple programs that were granted "server priviledges" in ZA and they must have been holding the port open. I've just now finished reconfiguring the list and I'm now 100% STEALTH :) Problem SOLVED :) Gawd it feels nice to win one once in awhile. Thanks :) ......Dave

I ONLY allow MSN Messenger and YaHoo Messenger server rights BUT the programs MUST ask each time. By the way, JUST what are "server rights' and how come I'm only getting some email notices for my various questions and not ALL? Thanks :) Dave

Dave. Server rights are only needed if a program must "listen" for a connection from the internet. Most programs will work just fine have 'access' only. This should include your messenger programs as well. Like Hewee, I've not granted any program including messenger programs server rights.

Let me add that some programs will request server rights although they are not required for the program to work just fine. Generic Host Process and Media Players often do this. My suggestion would be to always deny server rights until and unless an application will not work. You can always grant rights later.

From Zone Labs:
Exercise caution when granting permission for programs to act as a server, as Trojan horses and other types of malware often need server rights in order to do mischief. Permission to act as a server should be reserved for programs you know and trust, and that need server permission to operate properly
I can't answer the e-mail question except to suggest you check your options again.

BillC: Well I got THIS email notice :) Anyway I guess I mistakingly thought that MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger needed server rights so documents could be exchanged back and forth? As I said above, I ONLY grant to those 2 when asked and to be honest, I can't remember EVER being asked? I've just checked my ZA settings and no program has a green check mark under the server column in either "trusted" or "Internet". they ALL have question marks. I would but red X's here but I just love saying NO LOL. So MSN or Yahoo doesn't need server access to transfer documents? Thanks :) Dave

Dave I'm not a 100% sure for document transfers but once again I'd try it without granting server rights. If they don't need it for instant messaging, they probably will not need it for the files. Frankly, I've never tried.

And having the question marks is fine and what I do. Power is great, huh?
