Hi there,

When i used to plug in my Canon Ixus40 Digital Camera via USB my winxp sp2 pc would recognise it in" my computer" as a MSD as well as bring up the Canon Browser software supplied. Now it only does the latter and no longer recognises it as a MSD in my computer.
All views and suggestions appreciated. Thankyou. :)

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

Hi there Johnwill. I do have a USB mouse. I have switched back to ps2 mouse for now.

I followed your suggestion and everything went the way you predicted it would. Unfortunately it does not seemed to have made any difference though. I plugged in my Mustek DV5000 with the same cable tnat i use for my Canon Camera. It offers 2 lettered drives for mass storage " H and I " in "my computer" Possibly because there is a memory card in it ? I also plugged in my MP4 player with the same cable and this was recognised as removable disk H in "my computer". The Canon Camera pops up in "my computer" as "camera or Scanner" though still not as mass storage device. Anymore thoughts on this?

Dont know why my LG Phone turns up in "My Computer" as "other" device even though it is not plugged in? Its getting late now and i will try your guide again tomorrow just incase i missed something the first time around.

Thankyou for your suggestions and help so far. Regards. marcan.

Are you sure there aren't drivers for the camera?

i again johnwill,

When i post his i will not have tried your guide a second time.
I recently installed a Canon Pixma printer. Could it be a cnflict with this?

When i plug in my camera into either of my usb ports i get a new hardware found message and promptly informed that it has found "canon ixus 40" and" your new hardware is installed and ready for use". No mass storage icon in the device manager but is recognised as "imaging device"s in device manager. It is also still listed in "my computer" under "scanners and cameras".

I will maybe reinstall the software drivers that came with the camera.

It sounds like this is not the standard USB mass storage interface and may require the drivers for the specific device.

Johnwill,
I have searched my cameras documentation ,though not much is mentioned and searched some links via google. I dont think that the Canon Ixus 40 (or other Canon Cameras) are generic usb storage devices. I am however still sure that i have done this in the past, although have to accept that i may be mistaken. If i ever get a result for doing this i will post back to this thread. If not i will close it in time.

Thankyou very much for your views, posts and suggestions and your time.
Regards

Did you see this in the manual? Looks like you need to install the drivers and follow a specific sequence too. It's not a standard USB mass storage device. It appears you'll have to follow their Troubleshooting section now to undo what happened when you plugged it in without the drivers installed.

If you don't want to install the drivers, you can simply use a USB FLASH card reader and remove the FLASH card from the camera to transfer the pictures. That's what I do for several cameras here.

Never saw it in the manual till now JohnWill,

I had just been looking at the documentation and help on the installed programs that came with the camera. I have managed to look out the "user manual" this morning. I will continue to try and correct this.

I do however agree that a multi card reader would be an advantage. I have so many different devices that use differnt cards (phones, cameras, dv, mp4) etc that it would be good to have something that could easily swap files between them all.

My mission here was to transfer files to a micro sd (phone memory) with an adapter to my mass storage on camera, add mp3 files then put back to phone. My phone (Samsung d600) uses, if im not mistaken, usb 1.0. This is extremely slow at transferring mp3 files to phone. It can take up to 10 minutes for 6mb file.

Not really a quick reply but thanks for your replies and suggestions once more JohnWill. Regards. marcan.

I am wondering if "maybe" for some unknown reason the usb ports might have somehow got disabled in the bios? Long shot but with computers anythings possible.
