go to your "add/remove programs" (control panel)
open this icon up in there you will see (if you have this in this list of programs.

"microsoft internet explorer and 6 ps1 internet tools"

if you see this look down to the bottom right "add/remove" click on it
a window will open up in there you have some options choose
"repair internet explorer"
when that is done reboot your system.

see if this helps.

Does the error message provide a "details" tab you can click on for more info? If so let us know what "module" Explorer (or is it Internet Explorer) is faulting in.

Also try this: in Internet Options > Advanced place a check in "disable third party browser extensions". Then reboot and try again.

First let's determine if it an Internet connection problem or a browser problem.

Can you open up a DOS window and successfully run:

ping 199.181.164.1
ping www.yahoo.com

If these show a reply, then you can connect to the Internet and it is only a browser problem.

Have you tried reinstalling Windows on top of the current version. This can often fix these types of problems and will keep any installed programs and configurations.

So you either have a DNS or Winsock problem.

DNS
===
Run WINIPCFG and see what your DNS entry is set to. It should either be your router or the actual DNS IP addresses for your ISP.

WINSOCK2 FIX
=============
If you can't access the Internet with programs like IE, Outlook Express, or other web browsers, you may have corrupted Winsock entries.

To Remove the existing winsock2 registry entries (regardless of the OS) run:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/reg/xp_del_winsock.reg

To add Win98 clean entries back in again, run:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/reg/win98_winsock.reg

You may have multiple problems. Did you ever achieve a connection following the reinstall?

By all means follow Bob's advice, but addtionally you may be saddled with mismatched Internet Explorer files.

If you have a means of reinstalling Internet Explorer -- perhaps from an ISP disk you can try that. Otherwise you may have to reinstall Windows again following a slightly different procedure which will leave you with the original version of IE that came with your Microsoft CD or other installation media. This may be as early as IE 4.01, but could be upgraded from that.

In fact if you have another computer, as you must to be posting here, you could download the setup file for IE6 SP1, burn it to a CD and run it from there.
