I cant play dvd on my windows xp

My laptop (hp-older version) was having problems in its software (windows 7) so i gave it to an expert to fix the problem. He said he would have to re-install the whole thing for it to work again, so I let him.. and now i'm stuck with windows xp. The oldest one... i didn't know what to do with this and internet explorer but with my brothers help i managed to get mozilla firefox, chrome and a few others installed in this. Anyway- this windows has windows media player and vlc media player installed, when i enter a dvd in the drive, the icon of dvd rw drive or whatever does not appear in My Computer, which i'd usually double click to let the movie play. How do i fix this? i'm pretty sure the media player CAN play the dvd, its more like the windows is not [detecting] the dvd or something idk can somebody help me play my movie?? It just doesn't recognize that a dvd has been inserted or like doesn't recognize the dvd.

Hello can you please clarify? So this is an older laptop that originally shipped with Windows XP, and at some point was upgraded with Windows 7, but now is back to Windows XP?

What's the model name and complete model number of that HP laptop?

What's the part/product number(P/N) on it?

Do you live in the U.S.A. or a different country?

@CleaverX - Yes this is an older hp laptop that was originally shipped with windows XP but was upgraded to Windows 7 at one point and now is back to windows XP. I'm just concerned that once I enter a dvd in the dvd drive, an icon should appear in the My Computer tab that says something like "DVD RW", but it doesn't and so I don't know how to play the dvd. I tried going to the media player and browsing from over there, but it still doesn't appear anywhere, in short- my windows is not recognizing my dvd and i am unable to watch this very very important movie.
Please reply to post #3.

Also do the following:

Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

@flavallee Thank you for the reply mr. frank! I had to take a moment to look around the laptop, turn it side-ways, upside down, to look for the exact model number but i finally found it in tiny handwriting on the bottom right corner of the monitor, it says "Compaq 6715s". I have no idea what a product number is if what i just told you isn't the right one, and I do not live in the USA.
@flavallee Okay here:

it says "Compaq 6715s". I have no idea what a product number is if what i just told you isn't the right one, and I do not live in the USA.
You may have to remove the battery and look in its compartment to find the part/product number(P/N).

You said you don't live in the U.S.A., but you didn't say which country you live in.

Your "expert" installed Windows XP Professional SP2, but didn't upgrade it to SP3, so it's my guess the 100+ post-SP3 high-priority updates didn't get installed either.

Since the operating system is about 10 years out-of-date, it's my guess that's one reason there's a problem with the DVD drive.

You might have your "expert" read my install guide in the Windows XP section.

It has step-by-step instructions on how to install Windows XP and get it up-to-date.

That little jhakbndkhaksuihnedj so what do i do now? this means i cannot play my dvd anyway?
Please re-read post #9.

Depending on which HP Compaq 6715s laptop you have, it originally came with one of these operating systems:

Windows XP Professional 32-bit

Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit

Windows Vista Business 32-bit

Windows Vista Business 64-bit

Its part/product number(P/N) and the Windows version on its Certificate-Of-Authenticity sticker will confirm which one you have.

Thank you for your help mr. frank. I'll have my "expert" look into this. Or i'll just throw my laptop in the garbage, both could work.
You're welcome, and good luck.
