Ive tried fdisking, reformatting, and a different hard drive, the problem persists. Whenever i try to open a MS word, excel, or any jpeg file by double clicking on the icon the window/folder its in freezes, the program wont open, and i have to end task. I can, however, open the word and excel files if i open the program first, then browse to open the document thru the program.

Im completely frustrated with this, any ideas anybody? Im willing to try just about anything. If it matters O/S is windows 98, computer is P2 450Mhz. Word & excel are from office 2000.

Thanks in advance

Hi Chili_Palmer, Welcome
Try looking at what you have running in the background. How much memory do you have? Maybe too many things are running and explorer is just an added resource! Go to start, run, type msconfig
Go to start up tab, and post what is running if you can.

TW--

i have 384 Mb pc100 sdram, video card is a voodoo 5 5500 w/ 64 mb ram.

I did what u suggest and there are a whole slew of programs listed, which i find strage because i thought i had disabled most of them at startup for quicker booting. anyway, the list is as follows:

Mirabilis ICQ
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
System Tray
LoadPowerProfile
3dfx tools
AuidioHQ
New.net Startup
webhancer Agent
KBD MediaCenter
POINTER
Winamp Agent
LoadPowerProfile (yes it is listed twice)
Microsoft Office Startup
run=

I know what about half of these are and have no clue on the rest. hope this helps with the diagnosis. Thanks for the replies

Go to start>settings>folder options>file types>scroll down and find the type of files and see click on it. I will show which program if any you have to open that type of file. You can use edit to change the program that open a certain type or new type to add a certain type of file to a program. I have never used it though.

Hi,

You have some serious spyware there.

Uncheck the following in Msconfig/startup:

TaskMonitor
AuidioHQ
New.net Startup
webhancer Agent
KBD MediaCenter
POINTER
Winamp Agent
Microsoft Office Startup (if you're not using the Office Shortcut Bar)
run=

Click OK, close Msconfig, and reboot (important!)

Now go to Software add/remove and remove New(dot)net application and Webhancer Agent.

Reboot AGAIN.

Download and install Ad-Aware . This is a program which scans your system for spyware.
After having downloaded AAW, also download the latest Signature file (Reflist.sig) : http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ls/reflist.zip

Unpack it to the Lavasoft Ad-Aware folder in Program Files, and have it overwrite the one that's there.

Then have your drives and registry scanned for spyware, check all found files and reg keys, click continue, and have them removed.Reboot one last time.

Good luck,

As for your original problem, it's a good idea to restore the file associations for jpeg files, as DoyceJ already said.

This is the easy way:

· Select a jpg file by clicking once on it
· Hold down the shift key and then right-click your mouse
· Select "Open With" from the menu
. Choose Iexplore

If this doesn't work, download and run this reg file:
http://www.aumha.org/downloads/jpgprevw.reg

To repair your Office file associations, it's best to do the following:

Method 1
On the Help menu in any Office program, click Detect and Repair.

Click Start.

To restore program shortcuts to the Windows Start menu, make sure the Restore my shortcuts while repairing check box is selected.

Method 2
Double-click Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Double-click the Office 2000 entry listed in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box.

Click Repair Office.
Click either Repair errors in my Office installation, and then click Finish.

Select the Restore my shortcuts check box again.

Good luck,

There are some updates to Office 2000. Go to Start/Windows Update/Microsoft Office Products Update. Follow the instructions that you see there. You will probably have to wait while the update procedure examines your Office 2000 files. If there are updates, you will need the original Office 2000 CD's. These updates fix some problems with Word 2000 and others also.
