When I try to shut down my win98se, it will restart instead of shutting down. I downloaded the microsoft supplement Q239887 update but when I try to install it a window opens up saying "This update is not designed for your version of windows". What's with that? I do have win98se....What do I do now?

I uninstalled my AVG anti virus program and that seemed to solved the problem. Now it will shut down and not restart but now I don't have virus protection. Want do you recommend I do?

Hi try F 8 at start up..choose command prompt ..type.
scanreg /restore [note space] choose date prior to problem..Not oldest.
If it restarts..click>start>run>type msconfig.
Click on startup tab>uncheck All entries Except SystemTray>ScanRegistry.
Reboot.
You will need to retick your Anti-virus and Firewall in msconfig if you go online.

Because when I had it installed, I couldn't shut down my computer, it would just keep restarting. After I uninstalled it, my computer would shut down properly. So I need another antivirus program.

I solved my shut down problem by uninstalling my AVG anti vius but why won't it let me install the mircosoft update shut down patch Q239887? "This update is not designed for your version of windows" pops up when I try to install the patch. What's with that?

Hi are you running a dual-boot system?
Most Win98's can run without Config.sys and Autoexec.bat running in msconfig.
Avg normally runs a virus scan at boot-up..which uses Autoexec.bat.
But why that would cause a slow shutdown I do not know.

No, I'm not running a dual boot system......since I uninstalled AVG anti virus program, it's been shutting down okay so it must have been the program that was causing it. But I still want to install the mircosoft shutdown supplement patch but it won't let me do it....
