You'd run SCANDISK first, you don't want to try to defrag a filesystem that has issues.

I remember when Scandisk used to be a proper looking program that ran on windows. The windows XP (assuming you're running XP) scandisk looks quite...well...for the lack of a better word, a pathetic excuse for a scandisk tool.

I'd recommend that you get a 3rd party app to do your scanning. Most disk manufacturers provide some sort of utility for this, you may want to check their website for more details. Personally I don't really trust the new scandisk in XP.

Go to My computer > C: > Properties > Tools > Error Checking, click 'check now', check both boxes and when you restart it will run. It takes a while to run.

Defrag is on that screen also.

Actually, "SCANDISK" is a W98 and perhaps WME term. 2K and XP use CHKDSK.

Just wondering, how is the one that you access from rightclicking the drive different from the one that you get by start->run & typing "chkdsk", is it just a difference of GUI and CLI?
