Hello, me again. I am worried that my computer is infected with this retarded virus called "Virus Heat". On my taskbar, there is a little blue shield that changes from a question mark to a red shield with an X on it, then a msg pops up every few minutes telling me that my computer is infected with spyware and viruses and that I should click on the icon to download their antispyware solutions. I thought about going into my add/delete programs and try to just delete it, but could not find anything resembling 'Virus Heat' or any of the aliases that I read about. I downloaded TrendMicro HijackThis and ran a scan, but I don't know what the scan means or what to get rid of from it. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I work at Staples, so I could always take it in to have them look at it, but the cost of that is OUTRAGEOUS! If I can fix it here at home, that would save me from having to fork up 150 bucks! Thanks! :D

Here is my HJT log:

Thnx so much cyber for replying to me! I went to Combo Fix and did what you asked. Surprisingly easy for someone like me! Here are both the combo Fix Log and the new HijackThis log! Thanks again! :D
You're welcome!

A lot of time was put into the tutorial for ComboFix. I am happy to hear it was easy for you to follow! :)

Now I will look at your log and post back...

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text in the quote box below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lruvqvw.dll

Folder::
C:\Program Files\NetProject

Registry::
[hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\sharedtaskscheduler]
"{d4c51fa4-9192-4a9a-8d2a-a0690c92f171}"=-
Save the file to you desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.

  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive and all other fixed drives..
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.

    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Please perform a scan with Kaspersky Webscan Online Virus Scanner

Kaspersky does not remove anything but will provide a log of anything it finds. On August 8th, 2006 Kaspersky updated the software used for Free Online Virus Scanner. In order to continue using the online scanner you will need to uninstall the old version (if previously used) from your Add/Remove Programs list and then install the latest version. To do this, follow the steps here and reboot afterwards if your system does not reboot automatically or it will show 'Kaspersky Online Scanner license key was not found!

Sorry that took so long, everything was going pretty quickly until we got to the kaspersky thing, that took quite a while, especially all the updates. I can't thank you enough for helping me with all this stuff! :)

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 5.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Are you having any problems now?

Thanks so much for helping me out with all these goofy issues. I removed the 3 old versions of Java I had forgotten about and updated to the version you suggested. The little flashing alert thing that was on my task bar(virus heat) is GONE! Yay! Computer is running better, but still a little slower than normal. I remember seeing some viruses and I think Trojans on the kaspersky scan last night, could those be causing the computer to slow down at all? If so, what can I use to get rid of them, I don't even know where/what they are... Well, it is running a LOT better though, and I can't thank you enough for all of your help! Thanks again!
Oh, and if I don't feel secure donating to your site over the internet, is there an ofc or an actual address where I can mail a check? :)

Hey Cybertech! Sorry it has been so long since I hopped on here to do this, had a family emergency. Anyhow, thanks again for helping out with this goofy computer problem of mine. I downloaded the old timer thing, ran it, and I am also going to post the hijackthis log with it. My current version of combo fix is expired so I have to go dl the recent version shortly. Thanks!

Please download (save) SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your desktop. SmitfraudFix runs under W2K, XP only.

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Select all of the contents and Extract them
to a new folder called SmitfraudFix.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Ok, here is the smitfraud thing plus a new HJT log file. Computer is still running slightly slow, and about two days ago, when we logged on after being gone for a week, all of my security settings on McAffee had been changed to lower settings. I reset them, and they have been fine since, but I don't know how it happened. Thanks again for all your help!

Looks good.

You can and should remove all of the tools I requested you to download and/or folders associated with them now. It is pointless to keep these tools around as they are updated so frequently that the tools can be outdated within a few days, sometimes within just hours.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer has a CleanUp! option you can use to remove most of the fixes and associated files and folders.
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

It's a good idea to Flush your System Restore after removing malware:
Turn off system restore and then turn it back on: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405

Now you should Clean up your PC

Here are some additional links for you to check out to help you with your computer security.

How did I get infected in the first place.
