pretty sure what that is telling you is that something (extension, most likely) was causing that error. All you did was reset chrome to the default settings. You could rename default to defaultold, and then rename backupdefault to default, and you will have your stuff back, but most likely the problem as well.

 

Thank you Valis so much for your fast answer.!!! I just have to take your word because at this level computer stuff becomes very complex for me. But the question arises to ask if there is a way to retrieve my bookmars, and I separately could re-install the ADDSTOP extension

Now the procedure would be just to rename the two folders as you suggest and close from the top right corner X ?

Yup, just rename the new default defaultold, and rename the old default to default; that should replace everything. But as I said, it will probably replace the problems as well.

 

I took a look into "%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data" and I found 3 folders named like this:

User Data
User Data\Backup default
User Data\default

I am unsure which folder(s) I have to rename. Please advise.

Sorry....Do you mean to undo, to delete the 3 folders above described ? I just don't know in the order I found the folders which one is the new default and which one is the old default. There are not dates visible

When you say " rename the new default defaultold" do you mean default old separated or is it indeed defaultold together.

You need to undo this. To undo this, go to %localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data and rename the backupdefault to default; that's it. That's all you need to do.

You just did this earlier, and went over exactly HOW you did it in your first post. So you just need to reverse the steps you took in your first post, and change the item named backupdefault to default.

 

Now is clear ! The only thing remaining is how can I retrieve ONLY my bookmarks, not the extensions ?

 

only way to do that is to change the default, backup the bookmarks, change the default BACK to default backup, start a new chrome session and import them.

Good Day America !!

I have good news in the sense that my browser is working faster than ever and that I retrieved my bookmarks. However the exporting of bookmarks to a file ( I did it to Desktop) was unnecessary because the bookmarks seem to have remained untouched so when I opened Chrome back, the browser bar was already populated with the same bookmarks folders I used to have before this renaming activity advised by you.

There is a minor problem though. Always I open Chrome there always come with 10 tabs opened simultaneously, ten different sites that I had opened at the moment I originally made these wrong moves before posting here. I have attempted to remove all the tabs closing them at the bar to no avail. Any idea to eliminate the garbage left ? I tried to delete the bookmarks as Administrator but it did not work.

The Extensions are alive and well, i did not touche them, and the browser is working just fine !. There was the idea that one of the extensions was producing the initial problem THIS WEB PAGE IS NOT AVAILABLE. Same Extensions showed up along the bookmarks but without the slow opening or the message TWPINA

I need your advise Valis to conclude this successful operation.

what is your homepage set to? Odd to have 10 tabs opening at once. Are these all bookmarked tabs, or are they random sites?

The 10 pages opening are always the same. I Checked at the end of the bar folders and they are not there, but they are pages I opened the day I reported to TECHGUY site this problem. Otherwise all is fine.

your home page is what the app should show once you start it....I don't use chrome all that much (too much of a memory hog IMO) but you should have a home icon to the left of the URL bar. If you don't, click on the horizontal bars to the right of the URL bar > click on settings > scroll down to appearance > click on change, and let us know what is entered in there.

 

I am looking only inside the URL bar. As I open the browser ten tabs appear with different addresses, activated by me when I reported to TECHGUYS. They are always the same as I said. Now the only icon visible inside the bar towards the left is a little page with the right upper corner folded. Security address pages lets say from SUPPORT GOOGLE have a green lock. When I open a new tab it appears a little page with the corner at the upper right folded. This is only looking INSIDE the white URL bar.

 

what you need to click is the 3 horizontal bars (see pic attached, they are to the RIGHT of the url bar) and then get into settings.

I've a doc appointment I'm heading out for shortly, but will check this up on my return.

 

I did already "change" the THEME for the web page. When I open the Home Page so to speak, it appears the new Theme but still the same ten tabs show up on top of the page.

I noticed also that the browser is now more slow to open the page. It seems the THEME takes a lot of memory.

Unfortunately i did not find what you describe.When I open it comes the CHROME WEB STORE and there is not the option CHANGE at APPEARANCE. I reviewed the whole set of THEMES and my original Home Page was not there ( if you mean by that the THEME that I originally choose for my Home Page). APPEARANCE only has the options GET THEMES and RESET DEFAULT THEME. But not the "CHANGE" option. I wish I did understand properly your instructions.

What I did before was to choose a theme similar to the one I had before, and after I set it I noticed the browser become slower.

I was reading the consequences of this drastic shock therapy and I don't feel ready to loose all that information by resetting the browser settings. Perhaps I will do this slowly, deleting one by one, all the features that are affecting the activity of my browser. So far with your guidance my browser is working faster than ever in years and I am happy where I am now. For instance, deleting the THEME came to be a hughe step into releasing the speed of my browser and I thank you so much for arriving where we are now. If I go back to the starting problems I will come back in search of your kind help. Meanwhile I remain very grateful with your willingness to solve my problem.

Maybe you can think some way to solve the 10 pages opening at the same time, other than this drastic resetting of the browser. DO you think is there a way ?

 

On that link I provided, click on the 'homepage' link; that will show you how to change your homepage. I'm curious as to why 10 bookmarks are opening, and I think it's because you your homepage set up to open all 10 of them.

 

No, it never happened before and never crossed my mind to have 10 pages opened at the same time during the years I have had this laptop and this Chrome browser I have used form the very beginning. I will follow your link to see what goodies I find there.

 

again, just to verify; you do recognize all the pages that are opening, correct? They are from your bookmarks?

GOOD NEWS !!! I went to Chrome Settings and checked if there was a way to unpin the tabs. I coudl not find that option but instead I found tha if you go Settings------>Scroll down------On StartUp-------->Open a specific page or set of pages---------->Set Pages and there there were alll the 10 sites addresses listed top to bottom !!! I just deleted each one. At the right side, at the end of the address there is an X to delete the unwanted page or pages. I delted all of them and on the bottom of that window entered OK.....and voilá....problem solved.....
